Mac TT for Home & business riddled with glitches
on March 30, 2014
Posted by: wyre
It took me six attempts to "update" the final version of the Mac Turbo Tax for home and business before I was able to file this year. It only took one attempt to take my money to efile, and then the program proceeded to tell me to file a paper return, since i hadn't updated. Even though I had. Six times. Similarly, I spotted several glaring errors in the interview - some 1099 data ended up not showing up as a 'business' income, some additional income totals didn't transfer to the correct summary page, and there was a troubling disregard /misinterpretation of a regulation regarding asset usage that I had to override manually in order to be sure the info submitted on my return was correct. Quite dissatisfied with TT for Home and Business /Mac this year. I've used it for many years, and I suppose I've gotten lazy about transferring info from prior years, but I may need to shop around next time. It felt 'unreliable' and I still have some doubts, but my submission finally went through. I'm glad I didn't file earlier, as there were tons of mistakes (some not yet fixed, apparently).
What's great about it: conveniently imports past returns
What's not so great: numerous errors, late updates, very little tech support
I used to have my taxes completed by my CPA. But he retired, so decided to use TurboTax for completing my own taxes. It was easy to understand and took a little digging to get all of the information needed to complete everything. I will probably continue using TurboTax for future years taxes and sure it will get easier each time. Thanks for a great program! :)
What's great about it: Simply worded questions to guide thru all of the complex processes.
Hard to use for HSA contributions, K1 forms for NJ and PA., and in general K1 are difficult. For routine filing nothing unusual works pretty well. Extra state way too expensive. I went through the review- Turbo Tax said everything was ok except I had to print my PA return because of a schedule K. No problem. When I was finished efiling my federal return and went to save and print I received a message that stated there were errors did I want to save/print anyway?!!! A day late and a dime short to let me know there was errors again- Federal return was already efiled! If the error was only the printing issue-no big deal but how does one know that now??? Very frustrating!!
What's great about it: easy to follow for normal items on Federal/State Income Tax
What's not so great: extremely frustrating/difficult for non routine items on Federal/State income tax
There is a daily IRS approved per diem rate for which you do not need actual receipts. This would apply when there is no room expense, but one did have a valid overnight stay Pub 1542 has these rates, but I did not feel that you did justice to this section for my purposes. I had no overnight lodging cost, but did have 19 qualifying per diem quarters.
What's great about it: none
What's not so great: The meals and travel expenses on schedule C
This has been the most frustrating filing experience I have ever had with Turbo Tax. I had to return to previous year data even though the info should have been known by Turbo Tax. I have used it exclusively for years. It questioned my dependents, even though I provided over half of the support for them. In the end, I could not e file either return, due to technicalities, but Turbo Tax just stopped cooperating rather than offering solutions. Other items- Turbo tax said it was restarting after an update, but it had to be manually restarted. Please remove the OK, it's taking longer than a minute. It is rather silly to see it again and again. I go through the process several times. Each time I would go through, I would find items unchecked. I have always been a big fan of this product, but I am having second thoughts about using it in the future. The additional fees for state filing and using other services, I feel, are becoming excessive.
What's great about it: easy to enter data
What's not so great: Required me to check last year's forms for data that should be known
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
