I have a very detailed and difficult return to file with earned income (W-2's#, 2 businesses #1 LLC, 1 Independent Contractor#, farm income, children, house, etc. just about anything that you can have #except investments) and this program handled it beautifully and made sure I kept everything in the right place. I have a MBA so I have been doing my own taxes my whole adult life and I am glad I don't have to change that just because my life has gotten so cluttered!
What's great about it: Handles all my needs
What's not so great: Got hung up on a non-important form for the state
All in all up to standard, however, self-employed business hired an employee this year and program didn't ask me that question. Had to use the community to figure out to reset my business profile.
Probably the ever-changing and ever-more complex tax laws cause this, but some questions TT changes each year. Sort of frustrating.
TT doesn't seem to understand that the unreimbursed mileage my husband claims for his employment is NOT business mileage for our small business. Causes errors, as well as incorrect information on the 1040. Now, I've figured this out, and watch for it, but it makes a lot more work for me.
(This rating system won't let me use my own nickname; had to make up another one for this....)
What's great about it: Asks the same questions the accountant would
What's not so great: Puts unreimbursed mileage into our home business, not my husband's employment
Overall, it was a great experience and a great savings for me. Also gave me a chance to review and understand the different spending and income transactions.
What's great about it: Great for 1st time users as well a old timers
What's not so great: A few technical terms that had to be looked up
The box and all advertisements claim that you get one free state filing. I have always had to pay to file my state return with this product. I would be fine with paying to file that one state return but finding out when i click 'e-file now' that it isn't free is disappointing. We all hope that the product that promises a free return-and doesn't deliver, will get us our maximum refund that it also promises.
What's great about it: everything was great until time to file
What's not so great: state filing isn't free
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved
