Pros and Cons TurboTax Home Business 2013
on February 17, 2014

The TurboTax Home Business 2013 version has the following problems:
1. It does not produce a summary coversheet for Federal Form 1040A.
2. When filing the returns by mail, the program will prompt you for a 5 digit PIN code to e-File every time. It should not do this and never has in prior year versions.
What's great about it: I've been using TurboTax for many years and it's consistently a good product
What's not so great: See review below

I have always used a commercial tax perparer firm due to rental property and a self employed business. Turbo Tax handled all of this and easily led me thru it. Saved me about $400 this year in tax prep fees.
What's great about it: Easy. Through. Professional.
What's not so great: None I could find.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

NOT going to use Turbo Tax again!

I have used Turbo Tax for years with good results. This year it seems that they changed the way the "Walk Me Through Everything" function works.
It failed to walk me through all of my home office expenses. Apparently, after asking some basic questions about your home office it stops. Then you have to go back and go into the EDIT screen to finish putting in your deductions. The program does not tell you that you need to do that. I assumed the Edit screen was to edit the information that I had just entered.
Unfortunately, I didn't realize that it had skipped this part until after I had already e-filed my federal return. This has caused a $600.00 error on my Federal Tax return.
Then to make matters worse when I put the information in to see if it was worth amending my return...instead of making a new amended return it over wrote my original return. Including my states that HAD NOT been filed yet.
We are using an accountant next year. Not going to put myself through all this unnecessary headache again.
What's not so great: Don't like the way the "WALK ME THROUGH EVERYTHING WORKS"

Way Easier than I thought!

This is great! My tax person retired and told me to get turbotax and that I could do my own taxes. I was a bit uneasy but once I started I was thrilled! All the questions are asked - even down to the detail of charitable donations such as clothes, etc.! Super easy and there's help there if you need it. This is really the way to go - save money and do it yourself!
What's great about it: Walks you through it item by item
What's not so great: nothing!
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

A step back from prior editions

Turbotax is very poor for Employee Stock Purchase plan entry: in the past, the higher end editions walked you through this situation. This year's edition did not do so, and if I didn't know better, I would have paid significantly more capital gains on my ESSP. In addition, Turbotax does not remember the car depreciation on Schedule C from year to year. And for some reason, it did not transfer over the capital gain loss carryover. If I didn't have some understanding of the tax code, each of these items would have been in error on my return, costing me a significant refund.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Would have lost out on a major refund if I didn't understand taxes
