I was really dreading doing my tax return due to the new categories of Sale of Home, Sale of Stocks, lost my job and Inheritance. But TurboTax came to my rescue. It was so easy, and I'm even getting a refund!!!!!! Wow!
What's great about it: I has so many new categories this year but Turbotax waltzed right through them!
What's not so great: Would have liked default printing to print only papers for filing.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved, I bought or sold investments

Makes a frustrating experience tolerable

I don't mind paying taxes to my governments as much as other people. I just mind that it has become so complicated that its citizens, even those with graduate degrees, cannot easily negotiate income tax forms and rules. I spent several beautiful days off, sitting in front of a computer looking up files for dozens of small factual details required by tax forms. THIS is what I mind. TurboTax has done a great job of making doing your taxes less painful. Not fun. Just less painful. TurboTax is not perfect. It doesn't allow you to reorganize or alphabetize a long list of charitable organizations. For some reason, it didn't opt or ask me to pay State estimated taxes for the coming year. If you have a casualty loss, by default TurboTax does a carry-back but doesn't automatically allow the option of a carry-forward. You have to KNOW to do this. I didn't, and it cost me plenty. Next year I will likely capitulate and see a tax pro. It just shouldn't be this complicated to pay your taxes.
What's great about it: User friendly interface; allows easy switch from forms to interview questions
What's not so great: A select few quirks, like not providing option casualty carry-forward
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

I am spouse reporting. Been using TurboTax for years and felt like this year was more confusing than any other. Maybe I had more adjustments than before.
What's not so great: a little more confusing on roth IRA info than last year. still don't know if I'm right
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Not So Good This Year

I filed in five states this year. I had to manually enter information that should have been copied over. I was even asked to make calculations on data that should have been calculated by TurboTax. I was asked to enter final numbers for data that was estimated. I don't recall entering estimates. I was not able to change the data, as it was copied over from the federal form to the state forms. I was asked to "unmark as estimate" by using a drop down edit menu. That option was not available - it didn't work. I did a work around by chosing "override". I'm not confident in the final numbers or the overall results.
What's great about it: Copied much of the federal to the five states
What's not so great: Did not copy everything from federal to the five states
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

It is much harder to navigate around the product then it has been in past years if you don't want to folllow TT's path.
What's great about it: fewer manual calculations
What's not so great: navigation between subjects much harder

I like the easy to follow guide and questions on each new page. The questions are concise but carefully worded to elicit correct answers. I review my return forms, then go back and change some answers to make sure I didn't miss something or misinterpret a question. That single bit of flexibility has saved me from making mistakes on filed returns.
What's great about it: I like the menus and the concise but accurate questions.
What's not so great: I miss the "contained" Help button that didn't require internet access where I could study topics.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Is the devil really in the details?

There are two types of persons who will use the program. The first is a very physical person who accepts what is seen and is happy to just fill in the blanks and hope for the best. The other type of person is the mental person who is very interested in detail and knows better than to just fly through on instinct and trust of an unknown program. Some years ago TurboTax was oriented toward the mental person and the amount of detail came first rather than being trimmed away as it now is. If you want to be sure of the details that you are filling in going to the right blanks one must now go back into the forms manually and try to follow the program which only the IRS can easily do. It would be helpful if both types of program could be made available with the detail at varying degrees which could be chosen to make the user more comfortable without having to manually go back into the forms and try to pick up the pieces and fill in the blanks the program has assumed are not needed any longer. Don J.
What's great about it: The program is well constructed and achieves the goal of aid in filing income tax as advertised.
What's not so great: The program has lost all detail in many places.
