Generally OK

I have W2, 1099, rental property and retirement income. The system cross contaminated sole proprietor automobile business expenses into rental property expenses which was not caught in the review process. I caught it when I reviewed the print version prior to submission.
I chose to e-file. There was an expense to e-file in Maryland. The system would not allow me to deduct the filing fee from my Maryland refund because I owed taxes at the federal level.
What's great about it: Smooth
What's not so great: Cross contamination of some data.

What?! Taxes AGAIN!!!
on April 12, 2014

I have used TurboTax for several years now. That time of year comes around first think I think is Taxes AGAIN!! then I think TurboTax. I have used both the download and the purchased disc from stores. I have a small direct sales business as well as our personal taxes and TurboTax has questions all along the way to help find deductions, credits, and just good information to know. You can save your work and come back to it the next day if you have to look some things up. If you are not going to get a CPA to do your taxes I would highly recommend TurboTax. In all cases a good CPA is the best option, but you have to be organized and have all your stuff together and take it to them. I appreciate that you can send in questions and they will reply back. You can even apply for an extension if you need to. Thanks for the good job TurboTax.
What's great about it: I like that TurboTax has help windows with examples, easy to use, etc.
What's not so great: I do not like that there is not a live chat option, there should be a discount for return users.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

It seems that every year I use TurboTax, I get my taxes done quicker and quicker. Doing my taxes any more is such a breeze. I don't think I'll ever go to an accountant.
What's great about it: Everything is so clear and easy to update.
What's not so great: I have no complaints

TTax 2012 was much more user friendly. I filed the same type of tax forms in much less time. 2013 was much more cumbersome, took me @ 3x's longer to enter because I kept having to backtrack to find categories I KNEW I had to enter. Obscure entries such as early IRA distribution, 1099-Misc and etc were not as easy to find. Import did not work as easily as last year, so I ended up re-entering on my own. Was not as pleased with 2013 as I was with 2012.
What's great about it: Fairly easy to do online and walks you through the questions easily.
What's not so great: This years TTax was MUCH MORE cumbersome than last years. Questions didn't flow in a "tax friendly order".
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

If I want to return to a specific entry and/or correction for a final review and possible change of mind I wnat to have the capableity.
What's great about it: Info questions are getting easier to understand and data is easier to input
What's not so great: Extremely difficult (impossible) to return to a specific data point to review an entry

Intuitive and professional

Pretty happy overall with the process and detailed explanations. It would have been great to know that types of deductions must be categorized for filing. I had to redo the math a few times. Submitting was hard to do. It failed five or six times I am assuming because of late updates. Checked for and installed updates several times and even though it said the updates were current, submission failed. Finally got it to submit. I was worried that I would have to mail it in.
What's great about it: Intuitive, thorough, professional, detailed
What's not so great: submission problems (late updates), not sure about what category to place extraneous income into

Interface can be less annoying

1. Would be nice to have both form and easy step views open at same time. Especially for review of errors. 2. Pictures of people are annoying. You could make it more interesting if you randomly varied gender and ethnicity. I didn't see any American Indians! 3. Waiting for updates all of the time is annoying and troublesome. Should I file late so that I don't miss updating? 4. I generally use the enter it myself path. So in some cases such as the IRA contribution being led through 20 questions in a linear order is annoying. I would like to see the path.
What's great about it: I have used TT since it was TurboTax for 10 years so I am familiar with it.
What's not so great: Some of menus and and access to pieces are confusing.
