TurboTax2013 Review

There are a great number of things to like in the current version of Turbo Tax. The interview format has been significantly polished over the past few years and the additional information within each question as to what is common and uncommon is extremely useful. The easy access to the "It's Deductible" for Schedule A really smooths out the deduction process and valuation steps. However in the drive for a simple User Interface, certain important features are not easy to locate or utilize. It is obscure to a novice user how to access Calculation sheets to add supporting details. Also, the availability of the program's calculator function is also hard to figure out so I did not use it at all. It used to be able to paste the results of a calculation directly into the step you are working on, but again it was not used because it was hard to call out. I might also change the color of the top ribbon or change each tab group color as the user moves from step to step. It would greatly assist those "mature" users whose eyesight could use the assist. Under that same category - it would also be nice to change the color of the Form/NoForm option at the bottom of the screen - again a feature I missed until I was halfway through the program. Simply turning the arrow button yellow or green to indicate that a form view is available on that particular step would be really appreciated. Finally, I am not sure the "Turbo Tax Community" sidebar is a useful feature for the real estate it takes up on the screen. However the Flag utility is definitely worth it.
All in all, this program continues to improve so it continues to be my choice for tax software year after year.
What's great about it: Direct Simple interface
What's not so great: difficult to know where you are at within a category

I've used TurboTax for 20+ years and continue to be thoroughly satisfied. The paradigm of user-friendly software. I just wish every software product was as simpatico as TurboTax.
What's great about it: Easy AND thorough

just few things

1. "Do you have children?" - Should be "Do you have dependents?" because I do have children, adult ones.
2. "Which of the forms was included ..." - Why this question? Just look into my 2012 file which was already imported.
3. It comes back every year. "Check for updates" in the middle of tax report transmission. And after that, it throws me back to the beginning of the filing section to repeat all questions I already answered. Kind of stupid!
What's great about it: great improvement since the last year
What's not so great: few things still to be improved

Married to a Non-Resident Alien
on March 15, 2014

When you are married to someone who has not yet been granted their immigration visa to the USA, they do not have any legal status here - so they don't have a Social Security Number.
IRS allows you to file a Married Filing Separately using the code NRA in the SSN field, but Turbo Tax does not allow the entry of anything but numbers. Very frustrating experience.
Turbo Tax needs to allow the NRA code and then restrict the filing to File By Mail only, which is the requirement.
What's great about it: Easy to enter the data into the federal and state forms
What's not so great: Cannot enter the proper code for my non-resident alien spouse in the forms, tells me I need to correct errors!!!
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

So Easy to Use
on March 15, 2014

I love Turbo Tax. I have been using it for many years. I did have an issue this year with the State Program during my 2nd Tax Filing (for my daughter). The State program processed all the forms using the federal data, but did not walk me through the questions automatically for my daughters file, like it did for my file. I had to manually ask it to review the State forms before I could get it to do this. Because of this, I reduced the 5 star rating to 4.
What's great about it: So Easy to use
What's not so great: Had some issues with the State Program when I started my 2nd tax file
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

I did the easy family members first and e-filed them. The harder ones I had to print off to file.
What's great about it: Able to catch all deductions
What's not so great: Did not notify me that all I got was 5 e-files

I have 2 retirement accounts, my wife has one plus wages. We also have a small business. This year I inherited some money which had been drawing interest. Nevertheless filing with Turbotax was quick and easily understandable. In fact, if I had been a little neater with recordkeeping I could probably have done the whole thing in4 hours.
What's not so great: the requirement to put a unique nickname on this thing is a pain in the butt. One more try and I'll quit.
