Still the best way to go

Year after year still the best way to go. Each year I think of going to a CPA and paying a ton and each year i am amazed at how easy, even a complicated return can be with TurboTax.
What's great about it: Ease of use
What's not so great: None
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Not what it used to be

1st time with returns for more than one state. Planned to file the new state by hand, but i could not tell TT to ignore the 2nd state. In a multi-state situation, the user should be the one to determine which state form gets loaded as the "free" state.
Navigation issues - data -- once upon a time you could click on a field in a form or worksheet and say take me to the source of this entry and it would bring up the form that supplied the field.. Really miss that capability.
Navigation issues - forms - used to list all forms - now it only shows forms used in this return, so if I want to see a form such as 5329, I can not.
Navigation issues - help center - only shows help on the forms in the return.
TT should have hyperlinks to supporting IRS instructions.
A flow chart of the worksheets and forms in a return showing the data relationships would relieve a lot of the frustration I felt in trying to understand what TT produced.
It would be very nice for TT to have a RMD calculator built-in, so you could know how much the previous, current and next years RMD amounts were or will be.
Better handling of data that could be entered on different forms e.g. Sch A or Sch C. I used the "lead me" path to enter my data, and wound up duplicating health insurance that should have been only on Sch C on Sch A. Since the "lead me" path covers Business data first, I would expect it to point out that the Sch A entries were already covered on Sch C, and not to enter them again.
What's great about it: Easy on the eye
What's not so great: Can't specify which State to use

frustrated with e file

I am very frustrated with the e file process. I have used this program for years. Once file was rejected twice and son used it once. we could not get the instructions printed for mailing our forms and we are very frustrated that e file status has not came off our returns since we have to mail them due to rejection status.
Please amend that for next year .

What's great about it: easy to get through program
What's not so great: e file was rejected and we could not get it submitted after corrections
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

All components of a difficult return worked well

Overall a good program. It took me through all the necessary steps and the questions were helpful. I had purchased a property and am rented out several now.
While certainly cheaper than an accountant, when I add up all the various charges, multiple states, electronic submittal, other coverage, it seems pricey. At least that is tax deducible.
What's great about it: Ease of Use, good leading questions
What's not so great: Expensive when you add all the parts

My Review
on April 13, 2014
Posted by: Clergy1
I have used TurboTax for many years and I like it. My only complaint is that the walk-through instructions for submitting 1099-MISC income are not as clear and helpful as they could be for a clergy person who will likely be entering into line one of Schedule C an amount that differs from the amount in box 7 of his/her 1099-MISC. This difference is due to the housing allowance that is likely included in the amount of box 7 but needs to be excluded from Schedule C income and yet included in the worksheet for Schedule SE. In the future, could you include specific steps to help a clergyperson to walk through that part of the process? These should include questions like: Did you receive a 1099-MISC for income earned as a clergyperson? Did you receive a housing allowance? Was that amount included in box 7 of your 1099-MISC? Was that amount not included in box 7 but reported elsewhere on form 1099-MISC? And so on. The program could then automatically include a statement note at line 1 of Schedule C that could be appended to Schedule C to explain why the amount in line 1 is different from the amount in box 7 of 1099-MISC. The housing allowance portion that was excluded from the amt reported in line 1 of Schedule C could then be automatically reported in the worksheet for Schedule SE.
What's great about it: Fairly Easy to Follow Instructions
What's not so great: Not as helpful for clergy reporting housing allowance and 1099-MISC Income

Great experience year to year, very straight forward and clear instructions. Easy to go back and forth. The error checking option is great.
What's great about it: takes less time year to year by pulling in the previous return
What's not so great: its april 13th and some items still say waiting for update, I updated each morning
