Communication Complication
on April 13, 2014

Overall it is a good system and I would prefer a really good or great system.
What's great about it: walk me through is the only way to go.
What's not so great: comunicating is complicated in that it is difficult to speak with a live person
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Used TurboTax for the past 6 years and I love it compared to either paying someone to do it for us or sitting here with a paper form.
What's great about it: Simple, straight forward, less time consuming
What's not so great: none

Turbo Tax is easy to use to complete your tax returns for individuals.
The only issue that I experienced was when working on business deductions for the Schedule C I had questions that I couldn't get answers to when I had them. The questions were answered in later sections but not when I had the questions.
As an example, when I was going through my records I had a receipt for some equipment I purchased but I couldn't find a heading for equipment purchases. I entered equipment purchases in the help box and the response was that Turbo Tax couldn't find help on the subject. If the response had read "we will cover that subject in a later portion of the review" and then actually covered it (which Turbo Tax did do) then Turbo Tax would be perfect.
What's great about it: TurboTax Walked me through things step by step
What's not so great: Help on Schedule C could be improved and for the price the state return should be included

Not what it used to be

1st time with returns for more than one state. Planned to file the new state by hand, but i could not tell TT to ignore the 2nd state. In a multi-state situation, the user should be the one to determine which state form gets loaded as the "free" state.
Navigation issues - data -- once upon a time you could click on a field in a form or worksheet and say take me to the source of this entry and it would bring up the form that supplied the field.. Really miss that capability.
Navigation issues - forms - used to list all forms - now it only shows forms used in this return, so if I want to see a form such as 5329, I can not.
Navigation issues - help center - only shows help on the forms in the return.
TT should have hyperlinks to supporting IRS instructions.
A flow chart of the worksheets and forms in a return showing the data relationships would relieve a lot of the frustration I felt in trying to understand what TT produced.
It would be very nice for TT to have a RMD calculator built-in, so you could know how much the previous, current and next years RMD amounts were or will be.
Better handling of data that could be entered on different forms e.g. Sch A or Sch C. I used the "lead me" path to enter my data, and wound up duplicating health insurance that should have been only on Sch C on Sch A. Since the "lead me" path covers Business data first, I would expect it to point out that the Sch A entries were already covered on Sch C, and not to enter them again.
What's great about it: Easy on the eye
What's not so great: Can't specify which State to use

frustrated with e file
on April 13, 2014

from portland, OR
I am very frustrated with the e file process. I have used this program for years. Once file was rejected twice and son used it once. we could not get the instructions printed for mailing our forms and we are very frustrated that e file status has not came off our returns since we have to mail them due to rejection status.
Please amend that for next year .
Brenda Richards
What's great about it: easy to get through program
What's not so great: e file was rejected and we could not get it submitted after corrections
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
