1099 MISC problem
on April 13, 2014

I have three rental houses with the same management company. I received one 1099 MISC for the rental income from all three houses. Turbo tax tried to force me to put all the 1099 MISC income against a single house. I had to pretend I had three 1099 MISC forms instead of one to get the numbers to work.

I remember when personal computer spreadsheets caught on (mid-80's?) and all of a sudden you didn't have to be a mathematical modeler or computer programmer to explore numerical what-ifs and optimize quantitative outcomes. TurboTax has updated and applied this technology for relevance and ease for everyone - providing step-by-step prompts to feed personal financial inputs into a complex model of the US Tax Code. Along the way the user gets educated to make smarter planning and decisions for next year. I cannot imagine having a preparer charge me money for filing, considering I'd still have to do the time-intensive and critical part of providing proper inputs, else just pay up for "garbage in - garbage out."
What's great about it: Interactive optimization to help think about next year
What's not so great: Paying extra to efile the free state return

This train doesn't do reverse

This is a great program for decisive people who never have to check their work, do crossword puzzles in ink and never ask for directions; but God help you if you want to find a previous entry.
It is impossible to search on a single entry the user has put in the program. And you can't go back to where you were before you tried to find the past entry. It's like losing your place listening to an audiobook.
The treatment of 1099-MISC is also confusing if you have a sole proprietorship. I deleted all my 1099s when I though it was double counting the informationl.
What's great about it: Step-by-step coverage of tax return
What's not so great: Can't search on single entry; confusing treatment of 1099-MISC

Awesome software that helps me complete detailed K-1 forms required for taxes without a CPA
What's great about it: The software asks all the right questions
What's not so great: Figuring out Turbotax internal short cuts not evident
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I like using turbo tax but would appreciate it T Tax would not charge an extra $25 to e-file the state return at the end of the process. Its clever because I just want to get it done but it leaves me with a bad taste for the whole process.
What's great about it: gets easier every year
What's not so great: gets more expensive every year

Using Turbo Tax in concert with Quickbooks has made tax time faster and easier for many years. Electronic import of investment data alone can justify the ever increasing cost of the software. Some frustrations remain, though. Using the software only once per year means that navigating through the steps and forms has to be re-learned each tax season. I would like to be able to page through the current year and simultaneously last years returns for comparison while in step by step. Unfortunately, going back and forth through the steps requires re-answering questions that have already been answered, even when looking at last years return that has been filed. Overriding a field, alpha or num. rules out electronic filing! Correcting a description or number without overriding involves deep navigation and / or an expert work-around. Finding out about the override thing only happens at the very end after paying to E-file! Seems like the review should point out the inability to E-file because of an overridden field
What's great about it: Electronic import of Quickbooks data, and complex investment data saves hours of manual data input.
What's not so great: The cost keeps going up. Paging both ways through the steps could be easier.
