Turbo Tax covers every aspect of my taxes. I am not logically-minded when it comes to monetary matters and, after 10 years of experience, I do trust Turbo Tax.
What's great about it: Makes it easy to get all the info together and enter inthe right palce.
What's not so great: Can be a bit confusing if you go through on your own.
I have been using Turbo Tax for years and love it! I have been taxes professionally for over 30 years and Turbo Tax makes my job so much easier now. This is the first year I used the business version and it was so helpful and time saving. I will continue to use Turbo Tax and will continue to recommend it to friends and family.
What's great about it: Assistance, accuracy, easy to use, error check
What's not so great: none
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I will continue to use Turbo Tax. I have received great support. Everyone I have talked to when I call is eager to help and good at what they do. The program is not perfect but it allows a layman to do her own taxes. I like that. I recommend this program, but I also recommend lots of patience. I had my taxes professionally prepared previously and discovered she did a very poor job. I am thankful that Turbo Tax empowers me to do my own.
What's great about it: I like that I can do my own taxes. I like that Turbo Tax offers lots of support. I liked the people I talked with.
What's not so great: I did not get vital information I needed-what to save in order to import my previous year's taxes.
I have been a TurboTax user for over 20 years. I was a fan. I loved it. I moved to North Carolina as a federal retiree (which TurboTax knew as a result of my answers) and it missed a $4800 deduction for exempting my federal retirement income on my NC state return under the "Bailey Settlement". Who am I to know what the Bailey Settlement is. That's why I buy the product so it can let me know how to file my taxes! After a friend told me about it, I did a web search and in a matter of minutes found that I was eligible for the exemption under the "Bailey Settlement" (a retired Federal employee with over 5 years creditable service). TurboTax had that information about me already and could have directed me to the appropriate questions. I got back my entire State withholding amount for 2013. Now I will go back for 2012 and 2011. I'm not sure about next year. May go a different route from TurboTax even though I now know this. I am VERY disappointed in the TurboTax folks.
What's great about it: Great tool
What's not so great: Did not explain things which it should have
I have been using TT for both business and Personal tax filing for past 3+ years. Overall I would highly recommend using the software.
Using an accountant will require you to do much of the same work needed to get yourself situated to run through turbo tax - a little extra effort saves some big bucks.
I ran into trouble this year using TT Premier edition since their prompting questions let me to purchasing Home & Biz instead of going with just Premier. I had use TT for business to prepare all my biz related forms - TT premier didn't make that distinction - so when they asked if I had things like home office deductions and business expenses, it said you need to purchase the upgrade to handle those areas. They didn't ask if I had previously handled all that using either their software for biz, or if the forms were prepared by some other entity or SW. Short story, TT for Home and Biz wanted me to re-enter all the biz details I had laboriously entered using the biz only SW. BIG YIKES if I actually went thru and did for both.
The good side was that support was EXCEPTIONAL. They are definately worth calling if you get into a jam. The rep resolved the problem, and told me exactly what I needed to to do. As added major bonus, support was NOT offshore.
Next year should be better given that I am expanding my knowledge of tax prep on a yearly basis. Never thought I'd take any pride in that...
What's great about it: Effectively walks you through most tax situations to get to bottom line
What's not so great: sometimes lacks proper and complete workflow-questions
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
