As a retired tax consultant I believe that Turbo Tax is the best software out. It is very user friendly and you don't have to be an expert to use it and of course the support is outstanding.
What's great about it: I liked how easy it was to use and the fact that all the information required was taken from the previous year, a real t
What's not so great: Nothing specific
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I found my basic returns are easy. Over the years they have gotten complex and TurboTax does too!!! I like when information transfers between years, but some info is dropped (asked me if I filed a specific form last year...ugh...why didn't it transfer from previous year?#. WHEN YOU'RE STUCK...YOU'RE STUCK!!! No click to chat feature is exposed on the screen for direct assistance. Online forum-like help has a much lacking search capability. Answers need to be linked or tagged with form numbers and searching should key off tags. I received bunches of random answers for my seemingly simple questions #big thanks to GOOGLE!!!).
What's great about it: Wizard like info gathering, basic descriptions, off-line capabilities
What's not so great: No click to chat, no tag searching forums (like form number), some menus are HIDDEN!
I had a problem finding out if depreciation was done or not because the program pulled it forward from the previous year without noting that it had been done.
I also did not like the way farm rental income was directed to regular rental income. It did not do this in the past 3 years and tracking expenses etc. was more difficult for farm type expenses.
What's great about it: Easy most of the way
What's not so great: Pulled forward without notification
Correcting of errors after review shows several data fields which required manual entry. Do not understand why questions weren't asked during the interview to complete the forms automatically. Otherwise, a great product!
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Not 100% accurate in transferring data to forms
Turbo Tax for Federal Employees who have a TSP is better, but the interview still needs some work. Additionally, the new jersey state does not allow for a Federal Savings Account for medical. NJ adds the premiums and FSA contributions back into gross income. Therefore, they are deductible as medical expense.
I've been using Turbo-Tax for many years. The software gets better each time. It generally keeps up with complexities in investment income and complexities related to my spouse's business. There were only a few difficulties related to my more complex investments in MLPs that required inputting info from K-1 forms; Otherwise, the software worked very well. I give it an "A-".
What's great about it: Vary thorough; identified and corrected inconsistencies during final check; investment info largely downloadable
What's not so great: couldnt download all investment info; e.g. K-1 info required tedious manual entry
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
