Another solid year with TurboTax. I am happy to be done. TurboTax led me right through the return, however I could easily correct things by jumping to the appropriate part of the process. The software is fast so I do not lose my place while waiting for a "File Save" to occur.
If I were to imagine an improvement for this solid software, it would be places to leave my notes - right in the TurboTax file. In this way I could more easily reconstruct my tax return from the original source documents.
What's great about it: Most of my questions had readily available answers.
What's not so great: I iwsh I had a "big picture" map of the flow of data among the forms.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I found turbo tax to be very easy. I was a bit anxious about doing this on my own since I have a small business and some other income sources. I found TT put everything in easy step questions. It simplified the process. Also being able to come in and out and not lose any info was helpful. They even check if I had any left over forms to report. Like it very much. And saved a bunch of money from having tax service.
What's great about it: Step by step instructions made it easy to follow. Completely coverd topics.
What's not so great: Some extra info which was interesting but not needed in my form
I have been using computer based Tax software to file my personal income tax from the day that it was introduced by Chipsoft in the mid-1980s. There was a big learning curve back then, however the software just keep getting better and better. When Intuit acquired Chipsoft, in 1993, the software started to take on a whole new look and evolved into the best tax software that money can buy at a reasonable cost. Over the years I have saved thousands of dollars by doing my returns, and not having to pay "one of the so called tax experts" to input the same information into a computer that most people could do there self. I can't put a dollar amount to how much TurboTax has saved me with making sure that I got every penny back that was owed me on taxes, but I would bet that it is in the 10s of thousands. I have tried using intuits main competitors tax software a few years back, but quickly returned to TurboTax which has a user interface that I believe to be easier to navigate.
What's great about it: Get's better and easier to use every year
What's not so great: Haven't found any for the past several years.
I have been using Turbo Tax for 5 years. I found it was better than going to a tax preparer because, they ask and you answered. But with reviewing Turbo Tax I can answer my own questions , and have a better understanding of my tax situation
What's great about it: step by step instructions and error check
What's not so great: some area may require IRS help if you are unfamiliar with tax law
I think Turbo Tax is great for basic taxes. But I have foreign earned income from multiple countries. Turbo Tax chokes on this. I have to jerry rig the numbers I enter in worksheets to the numbers on forms 2555 and forms 1116 come out correct. As a result, I end up going back by hand through my taxes to make sure that the forms (as opposed to worksheets) are correct.
But Turbo Tax does deal with all the other calculations nicely and does most other adjustments correctly, as far as I can tell with our ridiculously complicated tax code in the US.
What's great about it: Excellent for basic, run of the mill tax preparation
What's not so great: It is necessary to jerry rig worksheet calculations so forms are correct.
If you are willing to read the notes they explain what you need to know to complete your forms have your info for your taxes right there beside you and it will be a satisfying experience that you know that you can do it yourself!!
What's great about it: This year's Turbo Tax was so much easier to use I couldn't believe it it took me 1/2 the time as in earlier years!!
