Overall, a good tax package.

A frustrating characteristic to me was filling in a blank box with data and returning later to the box and finding it empty. Is the answer I supplied previously stored or do I need to re-enter the data? Not knowing, I re-entered the data. I hated that but worse was the entry for the sales tax large purchases data entry. I never figured out why there was an error on the first date. I finally went through the check procedure and re-entered the date and associated data from the form and the problem was corrected. This one entry was extremely frustrating. This particular entry did not seem very well thought out and did not seem to recognize that there could be multiple tax rates applied within a single residency. Over all, I think that there is less explanation than in years past causing a little more investigation on the part of the user. Still....overall a good tax package.
What's great about it: Thorough
What's not so great: Sales tax large purchase data entry extremely awkward.

Not great for complicated situations

I found it extremely challenging to file a joint federal return and separate state returns. I know it is an unusual situation, but it is the reality for many of us in the military. In the future, I'll isa a CPA.
What's great about it: Easy for simple stuff
What's not so great: Difficult to handle complicated tax situations
Pros: I bought or sold investments

1. Too much work trying to figure out if form 8606 should include end of year value for my Fidelity sold MetLife deferred annuity. I started taking distributions this year and 1099-R had IRA box checked. Previously lack of a 5498 made me think it wasn't an IRA, but Fidelity now says its a qualified IRA.
2. Ohio Form 37 (to pay city tax) is difficult, all to pay $2. My W-2 is for value of group life insurance and doesn't fill in Local fields, yet that local tax authority wants it based on residence. I had to fake local boxes of the W-2 to make it flow through. Last year it wasn't tied to W-2, but the fix was too simple.
3. Trying to decide if investment advisory fees taken from Fidelity IRA Professional Advisory account are deductible is difficult. The help window on this uses different wording for this major fee than for account management fee (like for small accounts, I guess). Also, some instructions require "producing taxable income" whereas others say no IRAs, but my non-Roth IRAs are producing taxable income (taxed when I withdraw it).
4. Interviews on Minimum Required Distributions for IRAs resort to asking me for the MRD. I had to get Publication 590 and calculate them manually - Fidelity discards on line values when it puts up projections for coming year. Turbo Tax should have offered a worksheet incorporating Tables, etc.)
What's great about it: Automatic recalculation after corrections, and it caught some of my errors.
What's not so great: See review for several things that need improvement.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

In my earlier review I was not happy with the program. After the program refused to let me file with a supposed mistake, I printed out all form and discovered how to overcome the problem. The program was generating a form which was not needed. having traded vehicles, the program generated a form 8824 ( Like kind trade) which I deleted and everything was OK.
What's great about it: better now

I need to apply to both Florida and New York State. As I mistook to select Florida States at first and basically most of all need not pay any State tax to Florida, I need to pay additional cost for New York State tax. I hope Turbotax introduce us to select New York State tax at first. So, we need not pay extra cost.
What's great about it: Easy to poperate
What's not so great: Extral cost for non-tax State
Pros: I had a baby

The program works great and looks the interview style format and the professional style of forms that it creates . The only problem that I ran into was a quite frustrating 25 minutes of going in a loop due to a turbo tax bug that wasnt fixed. no information was available about this problem on the web in the help section . I found the customer tech support and they walked me through all the step needed and then and only then the forms would transmit.
What's great about it: ease of use and interview style questions
What's not so great: computer bug didnt allow my computer to transmit taxes
