Overall software is rather good. We are repeat users with over 10 years of use. Will continue using most likely.
What's great about it: Handled all my various forms of incomes very well
What's not so great: Unable to find area or box to enter my State Tax withheld on my retirement income reported on the 1099-R
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

this application can walk anyone through the steps to gather and report your annual tax information - it's great!!1
What's great about it: Walks you through each step in the process
What's not so great: Descriptions of deductions, etc. could be a bit more concise

I have been using the product for a number of years. Had to add the business portion since I retired and then did some contract work and consulting. I was not always sure where to put a business expense. I did finally find a place for everything.
What's great about it: Good guidance thru the process
What's not so great: Some numbers lack an explanation of the source. Especially on the state
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Section 179 and Depreciation
on April 14, 2014

I am a small business and have used turbo tax for years. However when you have to depreciate an asset or take a section 179 deduction or recapture the program is not very much help at all. This has not changed for many years. I am not really sure what is so difficult about this. I always transfer over prior years information, so you should have the numbers for the calculations, but essentially every time, I have to figure it myself.
What's not so great: section 179 and depreciation

Review of my tax return experience

While I like the fact that all the calculations are done for me and I can import from last year and import my W2s and from some of my banking institutions, some of the process is too transparent.
Also at one point I knew i put something in wrong but had to say I had an enty and then go in and zero out to get rid of it. My IT background came in handy yet it was still fustrating.
What's great about it: Calculations are done for me
What's not so great: Too Transparent

For the business portion, there were some sections that ask questions than have no help topics and where not self explanatory. It would be helpful if in each section there was a button to click on to get you directly to a help section. The main portion that got me very confused was the part where it needed to enter my income in date range sections, to see if I could eliminate my underpayment penalty. My income followed the description guidelines of the section to eliminate this penalty, but after entering the info, I didn't qualify. I suspect this is because I didn't understand how to enter the info correctly. Not a huge deal, but it would have been helpful to have an example to follow.
Also at the end where you have to fix your errors, there were some items that come up that were not self explanatory. It would be helpful if there was a button that would take you right to that page in the program to see how the section was laid out. That way if would make more sense on how to fix the mistake. If was hard to go back and find the section on my own to see what info was really needed.
What's great about it: walks you though all sections
What's not so great: doesn't have link or a tab to question a section or topic
Pros: I moved

Many problems
on April 14, 2014

I had specified that I wanted to file an extension for my Federal taxes. When it came time to review/file there was no apparent option for specifying a Federal extension as there is for my state extension. At one point under Personal- Other Tax Situations I was presented with the address for filing my Extension with the IRS. I did not want to file it by mail but electronically. I eventually found the online version of filing an extension. I was later able to file my state extension from within TurboTax without issue, if only I could have done the same with my Federal.
Another problem I encountered was related to the renovation and conversion of a 3 unit rental property into 3 condominiums. The federal side of the product handled this well, the help could be better in describing this situation, but the state (Massachusetts) calculated that the entire sale of the property was a capital gain for me ($800,000+ when it should only have determined a capital gain of ~$50,000. It appears to have not factored in the original cost of the building or my 1/3 interest in the property. Because of this large difference I do not have any faith in the product and am unable to rely on any of the calculations and I am forced to go back to using my personal accountant for completing this years tax returns.
I realize the capital gains situation I have is unusual but I have reviewed the numbers several times, as has my wife, and we can't figure out how to correct the state calculations.
What's great about it: good flow thru most of the product
What's not so great: several major problems with losing track of my earlier selections
Pros: I bought or sold investments
