It would take me much longer and would require me to read and reread instructions to do my taxes without the guidance of Turbo Tax interview method. It is especially helpful to be able to pull in data from previous year.(s). The review and opportunity to correct errors or places where entries are inconsistent is also helpful. And importantly, I have confidence in the accuracy of the calculations.
What's great about it: Interview style - you input data, TT knows where it goes but also have option to select by topic
What's not so great: Difficult to modify your data once input - must go to forms to update
The only real problem I experienced was since I could not e-file my state return I had to select the "No, I will file it later" choice. There should have been a choice "I elect to file by mail" so I could simply print the state return needed for filing. Instead, I had to go through several steps in order to print a state return to file by mail. My suggestion is that you add another choice to the list when having to select how to file a state return. I would have preferred to e-file, but I did not meet the qualifications.
What's great about it: The questions were easy to follow.
What's not so great: Online support was not as responsive as it was last year.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
Good step by step through the business side of the return. For a month, after I'd gotten my financial firm's tax statements and was pretty much ready to go, the program kept insisting that the IRS and TurboTax hadn't figured out the sales tax deduction. I could, however, send a note to be notified by email when the solution had been identified and updates were ready. The notification never came. I went to the on-line help and found a suggestion that updates had to be done manually. I did that and viola, it was accomplished. What happened to the automatic updates that TurboTax used to employ? Anyways... it all worked out. I'll be using TurboTax again next year.
What's great about it: My first year in business and TurboTax Home & Business made it easier than I'd expected
What's not so great: I kept waiting for the state income tax/sales tax update notification that never came
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
What I'd like step by step to do: a) When I save my return to return later, I'd like to return to the same spot. Or at least have the option to do that. This has never been the case. Still isn't. b) When I go through a long list of steps to just get to one list that has a change in it I have to go through all the lead up questions that have already been answered. SOMETIMES it shows me my previous answer by default so I just need to 'next' through. But not always and it can catch you unaware and screw things up. Please always put my prior answer in as a default. Better yet, give me a list of where to jump into the dialog, which would keep all answers leading up to that point the same as previously answered. c) In California, there are many areas of adjustment. Why not say "Last year you adjusted xyz - do you want to revisit that this year?"
Fix these and I'll never complain again. This year.
What's great about it: Fairly good software. I've used it over 15 years now.
What's not so great: Step by step is the only way to go, but it's very clunky
