Foreign Tax Interface Still Leads to Confusion
on February 23, 2014

I have used TurboTax for many, many years and really do like it, and prefer it even though it costs more than the competition. I am still not satisfied with the Foreign Tax Credit Interface, you end up having to visit forms you don't understand and the internet is full of stories about these confusing forms, 1116 and 2555. I would really hope that Intuit recognizes that their step-by-step interface falls down to some degree (in comparison with all the other interfaces of this excellent program, which work so well) when it comes to these forms, and will address this to improve the tax filer's confidence that all has been done successfully and correctly. It still seems to be kind of a circular situation, you go back and forth until everything seems to be satisfied but there is still confusion as to the exact details of what actually happened. I know this is common because so much is written about it. I think the confusion centers around (but not sure) of the handling of MAGI, the modified adjusted gross income, when Foreign Tax Credits apply.
What's great about it: Very good program except for Form 1116 and 2555 Interfaces
What's not so great: Foreign Tax Credut Interface still requires confusing visit to forms
I like the ability to easily go through the process but I can not stand the fact that the extra fees come up at the end. I will not be using turbo tax net year. I can deduct the cost of my fees so I'll go have someone else that will do everything for me.
