Student Information Worksheet Needs Explanation
on April 15, 2014

I actually love TurboTax, but I feel like your help functions have degraded over the years. See my comment in the Cons section.
I am the parent of a college student, and I had a heck of a time figuring out how to complete the Student Information Worksheet. I felt the Help was spotty at best, and ambiguous at worst. What, in fact, does Part VIII (QTP or 529 Plan) line 3 mean "Qualified Higher Education Expenses applied to QTP distributions?" I would be happy to help (and grateful to understand) TurboTax work on this section to make it more usable and understandable.
Sincerely,
Laurel Garland
What's great about it: I make a single change and it is updated throughout all my tax return!
What's not so great: Help Center NEVER takes me to what I am working on at the moment. Kind of useless.

I am always amazed at how the program guides you along and assists where you get stuck. I love the prompts and explanations. If I can get out of my own way the process would be easier still. Thanks.
What's great about it: Focus on accuracy
What's not so great: My own ability to comprehend

Gave me a headache as usual

I think the most serious deficiency of the program is that it does not organize a couple's data so as to make a recommendation about filing singly or jointly.
Speaking from experience of NY (including NYC UBT and MCTMT), NJ (non-resident) and OH returns, they really cut corners on programming the state modules; the state returns are impossible to complete within TurboTax without reference to state websites and/or manually completing some forms.
What's great about it: Helps organize data
What's not so great: Struggles with complex situations
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Get it together!!!!

Have used TurboTax for years and have been pretty happy with it, but something went bad with it this year. The problems I had:
1. You need to design an auto-save capability into the program for every entry (like Quicken). I had my federal form almost completed when I accidentally hit some key (don't know which one) and lost everything--couldn't find it anywhere, so had to start all over--it cost me at least two hours, not to mention the frustration and tedium of re-entry.
2. The first time I entered the data, the program led me to and logically and smoothly through the "home office deduction" procedure (am self-employed and work from an office in my house)--the form 8829 work sheets and entries. After it "crashed" (item 1 above), I re-started the program, at which time it downloaded and installed a number of updates. I COULD NEVER GET BACK TO THE HOME OFFICE DEDUCTION PROCEDURE OR EVEN FIND MENTION OF IT IN THE BUSINESS FORMS AND ENTRIES (like I had the first time through)!!!. I looked high and low for it, trying every avenue to get to it. The only place I could find it was in under "view forms" menu, and then entering the data was difficult, as it wouldn't let me fill in some blanks without leading me to and through one or more other laborious "work sheets". Further, it didn't coordinate the entries with other related forms and entries. WHAT SCREWED UP???????? Am having serious second thoughts about using TT next year--am at least 50% disappointed and frustrated with it this year after this.
What's great about it: Easy to use (but not completely)
What's not so great: Can't manually override entries or get back to certain forms or procedures

It is great to see how taxes are figured and why.
What's great about it: Love the hand-holding guide and explanations of all areas.
What's not so great: You don't pay my taxes for me ;^)
