Don't know what's changed since previous years, but this walk-through seemed easier than ever. Appreciate the capability of e-filing. Transfer of info to state refund was also quicker than ever this year.
What's great about it: seemed easier than ever this year
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I retired from state government 12/31/2012, and my 2013 income consisted of my state pension, some Soc. Sec. and consulting work. The $30,000 I earned in consulting was most difficult to file. The travel expenses were very confusing - I traded cars during the year and entered a lot of info prompted by TT that was probably useless. Got a basis for depreciation and have no idea why as I used the standard mileage deduction. When I got to my state return, I was supposed to add back a section 179 deduction and I have no idea what that was or how to compute it. Finally, I upgraded from deluxe to business in the middle of completing the return, which proved to be double work.
Don't feel totally confident in what Turbo calculated, just keeping my fingers crossed. Not as user friendly as it used to be.
Have used TT for years. Not sure I will continue as this part-time consulting job was very difficult to enter.
What's great about it: thorough
What's not so great: business expenses confusing
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
We saved almost $500 by using TurboTax instead of the CPA that we've used in the past. Even with a small business, this was easy and relatively quick. I probably wouldn't want to do it myself if our taxes had a lot of unusual things, but ours is pretty straight-forward and using TT was a great decision.
What's great about it: Kind of foolproof, quick and painless.
What's not so great: A few confusing things, but nothing you can't get through.
It worked just as previous years. I had a hard time getting last years reviews up tho so i am now putting the pdf files on disks so i have access to them.
What's great about it: easy to get thru
What's not so great: goin thru old tax returns cause the pdf file from previous returns were on our old computer that exploded.
I love using Turbo Tax. The only thing I would change (and this happens every year) is a place link where all the tax forms are listed, with links to each form and where you enter it on Turbo Tax. I find myself going through the program twice because I misinterpreted what was being asked at the time. I would also like to see the buying and selling of stocks section easier to input. I trade options and they are very confusing to enter through Turbo Tax.
What's great about it: I can do it myself
What's not so great: sometimes it isn't clear where to enter information
Have done our taxes for years, the old way...fighting for the IRS forms and traveling to various locations to find the ones you need. Then a few times with a tax prep company and didn't like paying a high fee and getting smaller refunds. Turbo made it easy with the home business and personal so that the tax process is relatively stress free.
What's great about it: Easy to navigate, step-by-step, nothing left out, no forms all over the house, no paper for the cats to be laying on
What's not so great: Form view doesn't always jive with the screen you are on
