Abandonment of Rental Home
on April 15, 2014

I had a rental home in which I lived in for a year then started to rent it each full year for about 10 years. The economy sank and with it my house. On the last year it was occupied for about 11 months. I then had to abandon the home and was sent a Form 1099-A. The program didn't originally handle the situation and I had to call in for some professional guidance in terms of overriding some of the forms and/or worksheets. The depreciation recapture with the F1099A was not easily handled. It was done...but for a nominal fee for which I shouldn't have had to used with the Home and Business software. The CPA was very very good.
What's great about it: Importing information from the previous year into the current year
What's not so great: Not all the worksheets can be easily adjusted

I've been using TurboTax for years now and never have I had such problems with their E Filing. First the forms were unavailable, then it wouldn't let me Efile. Next time, I'm going to look into just using the IRS website.
What's great about it: Ease of finding Deductions
What's not so great: E-filing
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

20 years of efiling

I've used TurboTax for 20 years and have found it to be the only way to process my returns. My only issue this year was the dividend reinvestment cost basis calculation for a stock sale. It obviously wasn't working, but I couldn't figure out how to fix it. Otherwise it made calculating taxes for my home and business pretty easy.
What's great about it: Made an unpleasant task a little easier
What's not so great: Don't think it calculated dividend reinvestment right
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I have been using this software since before it was Quicken and all I can say is that it gets better every year. The best feature is been able to upload all your info from the past year and the downloading of all financial info like w2, 1099's of all flavors, etc..
What's great about it: Easy to use, broad coverage
What's not so great: Needs a simulator to examin different cenarios

A little disappointed

When items are input off the 1098 it doesn't show on the step by step. when i re-entered the amount it doubled. I understand why, but it was still a little confusing. this was my first year filling out the k-1 1065 and boy! what a round I had trying to finally get it to work. A lot of the little rectangles turned red and I had 21 errors to get straight. I hope next year is easier. Car mileage seems to be one of my problems with TT. Overall I will continue to use Turbo Tax as I have for around 15 years or whatever. I just thought that this year was harder to do than usual.
What's great about it: I really like the step by step and the roll forward of info
What's not so great: difficulty with the k-1 need better explanations, 1098 home tax doesnt show in step by step, confusing
