Its Deductible is Awful!
on April 15, 2014
Posted by: TheFranks
Items in It's Deductible are from the 90's or earlier. Time consuming to find an item. No current items from this century are listed.
What's great about it: Turbo Tax is easy and fast.
What's not so great: It's Deductible is tedious and archaic

2013

After the wrong 2012 tax file was imported I did not catch it until 1/4 of the way through. I had to locate the file to upload and start over from the beginning.
What's great about it: Walks you through all you need...
What's not so great: did not list all 2012 tax files for possable upload (select)
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

A lot to like
on April 15, 2014

Turbo Tax seems to keep getting easier to use. One criticism I have for 2013 is that the "Save As" feature was not on the file menu. It only showed up when I did a search for the command from the Help menu. I want to save multiple copies of my return with different scenarios, and found that a bit harder this year. I am not an expert, though, so perhaps I missed another way to do this. I also thought the section on IRAs was not as straightforward as it should be. It walked me through by asking me how much I had set aside, or was planning to set aside. I want TT to actually TELL me how much to put aside in the type of IRAs I indicate I want to use, not wait for me to say what I was planning to do, have TT do its calcs and tell me I can't, and THEN tell me what I could do. So I had to punch through a couple of times for me and then adding in my wife to see what we could put into our IRAs. I would have assumed that TT would have as a primary assumption that those of us doing our taxes want to be guided down the path of being told exactly how to maximize our IRAs. When I saved a file using "Save As" the program wanted me to password protect the file, for my safety it claimed. Ok, but it did not tell me if when I submit my file for electronic filing, will the IRS need my password? No? If not, then am I saving it with a password on my PC for my safety, but submitting it on the internet without one? How is that a ton safer? There are a number of small changes like this I would make to the user experience with TT.
What's great about it: Easy to use; auto-loads data from many financial sites
What's not so great: IRA section not as straightforward as I would like

A little buggy this year
on April 15, 2014
Posted by: PYSP
This year turbo tax seemed very buggy to me. I had to keep saving. The program would no longer open as usual, it put a pin on return when one was not previously selected and I could not choose to apply refund to next years taxes, though I asked the question. The options or selections given were never offered.
I have used turbo tax for 10 plus years and would like to continue, but I will have some reservations for future use.
What's great about it: All necessary forms are available
What's not so great: Program wasn't performing as usual

NY State does not tax NY Pensions
on April 15, 2014

NY State Pensions are not taxable in most states, especially NY. My NY State Pension was taxed under NY law last year, according to your software. I just realized the error tonight when i did my 2013 taxes. Not only that, I made what i thought were necessary changes and the software taxed my pension anyway. Have to reconsider this software if that does not get straightened out.
What's great about it: I think your softward logically guides you through the tax laws
What's not so great: I reviewed my 2012 NY Taxes while doing 2013 and realized your software made my NY State Pension taxable for NY and it t

2013 Tax Review
on April 15, 2014
Posted by: Nrthtx2006
Would be helpful in future if during review/check if potential error is found, you could see form and prior to making change, you could be directed to spot within program that deals with the error. That way you can read through items and make a better/more informed decision on how to answer. Very difficult to find right spot now as things exist. Should be easier.
What's great about it: On Computer and Fairly Easy
What's not so great: Difficult to get to certain forms to review and then get back to spot on program to change or update information

Glad it's done!

I've used Turbo Tax for years with generally good results. I had problems with an IRA rollover this year and ended up paying income tax on it that should not have happened. I'm not sure if it was another example of IRS confusion or personal "operator error", but it's rather irritating whichever it is. I'm certainly confused...but still glad Turbo Tax is keeping up with IRS changes so I don't have to blow my own mind over it.
What's great about it: Walked me through the landmines
What's not so great: Problems with IRA to Roth Rollover
