Turbotax Home and Business Review
on April 16, 2014

I've used TurboTax for more than 10 years and it gets better every year. There are times when it might forewarn you that it may not be worth your while to enter all of the data for a certain deduction (like Home Office) when you probably won't qualify. Also, I may have found a bug in the Home Office section. If you enter property tax on Schedule A - line 9) and it is later disallowed by AMT, it still appears in Schedule A but is essentially "removed". Property tax is one of the Home Office deductions. However, on the Home Office Worksheet, line 45, Mortgage and Real Estate Taxes are removed because they were already entered on Schedule A. This makes sense for the Mortgage because you can't use it twice BUT.... it doesn't make sense for the Real Estate tax because, even though it appears on Schedule A, it is "removed" by AMT.
What's great about it: Easy to navigate. Good explanations with most entry items.
What's not so great: Insufficient information on why certain deductions are not allowed.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

2014 Taxes

Have used Turbo Tax for more years than I can remember - always great. Just wish AMT was a little easier to follow, have to know the tax laws instead of relying on TT. But then if it had all the answers we wouldn't need accountants much anymore would we - LOL!
Thought I got a review of my return when I purchased the extra protection - not anymore?
Thanks!
What's great about it: Continuious and easy for home based business
What's not so great: Not easy to follow the AMT guidlines...what all do I get with my added protection?
Pros: I bought or sold investments

kept getting messages to update, updated twice which did not need to be done, still no go . have used tt for 20 years, but need to rethink this software for the future. package included an efile for fed which did not work because of tt. feel like a refund should be made as it created 30 miles of driving to get forms printed and mailed. totally dissatisfied.
What's not so great: turbo tax did not work to transmit fed taxes

Everything went great except for my VA state return, Turbo Tax kept stating it was an amended return, and in fact it was not....some sort of glitch.
Your individual State and filing fees have gotten expensive!
What's great about it: Almost Everything
What's not so great: Problems with VA state tax, and Fees have gotten too high
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

5th Year Success!!
on April 16, 2014

After five years of use I have had only one booboo that caused an audit and necessary increase of $25k in Federal tax payment. It was the way that an 401k temporary withdrawal and timely repayment was entered and calculated. I had subscribed to the tax advice service against my usual conservative nature that helped to bail me out of that fix! I recommend that you better tell us what and how financial investment import from sources such as Merill Lynch is entered and use in calculations.
What's great about it: Best interview of thoughtful systematic info collection
What's not so great: Needs a much better Q&A and personal inquiry database
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Held my hand and never let go!

If this were hotel, I would give it a five star rating. The user flow was easy and simple to follow. I could go backward and forward through the steps without encountering any software issues which was great. It was very and very clean. On the way out, check out was very thorough and the suggested add for the audit defense was very appropriate. I took advantage of it since it's been a couple of years since I have filed. I am looking forward to the return trip. No more tax prep offices for me. I also plan to use the free financial tool to track my money during the year. Thanks for all of the wonderful tools Turbo Tax!
What's great about it: I loved the running totals and auto calculations with every step I took. It also helped to have the error check.
What's not so great: I have nothing bad to say...maybe that is a con in itself but this was better than waiting to be seen at the tax office
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

Changes to Step-by-Step Method are Confusing
on April 16, 2014

I used TurboTax last year and found it to be straightforward and simple to use. Maybe it's me, but this year it seemed more complicated.
I found it very confusing to skip around from personal to business questions and back. I'd have a W-2 or 1099 in hand and it wouldn't ask for all the information, so I'd have to use it again later.
I didn't like to tone of the step-by-step method. Tried to hard to sound human, when I know it's just a computer program. Don't need all the "chatty" stuff with pictures of actors pretending to be tax experts.
Because I found the step-by-step confusing, I switched to using forms. That was difficult, but I preferred it. One thing I didn't like was having to create separate worksheets for each individual charitable contribution, rather than consolidating them on a single page as I've usually done. The amount of forms and worksheets makes it somewhat cumbersome to work with and find things.
What's great about it: thorough; e-filing is easy
What's not so great: jumps around, not a logical flow; tries to mask actual purpose of some questions; too "chatty"
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
