Many Years With TurboTax
on June 23, 2014

We've been using TurboTax for 15 or more years. It just keeps getting better. Even occasional years when we filed through a tax accountant, we used TT to work up our numbers.
What's great about it: Intuitive, accurate, fast
What's not so great: Slow to start app
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Great for W-2 and 1099 Combination Year

My wife and I retired from the military and teaching this past tax year and had to pull some Roth IRA money out to cover kids' college. I started working as an independent contractor halfway through the year. This made my head spin with the tax implications. TurboTax Home & Business guided me through everything in about 1 long afternoon/evening. I had only 1 "glitch": there are 12 reasons why you would take out IRA money and not be tax penalized, and number 8, college expenses was not on the walk-you-through mode. After a very quick call, Chuck at the help center told me how to edit the forms directly #VERY AWESOME# so I went into the 5329, into the line 2 inputs and changed the amount to column for reason "08" and I was done. Easy enough, good customer service. Now that I know about "Forms" direct edit mode, I can rely on the step-by-step process, then review forms and edit as required. Very good product.
What's great about it: Took into account multiple income sources and IRA withdrawals
What's not so great: One glitch in entry (corrected in "Forms" mode)
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved, I bought or sold investments

TurboTax Home & Business

It is a really good Tax program.
I only wish that problem areas and discrepancies would be explained in simple English. I don't have an Accounting Degree. All explanations seem to be in IRS-speak.
I use the Home and Business version, but it doesn't seem like the two parts talk well to each other. I had to keep going back and forth between the two in order to completely fill out personal deductions.
But, like I said, it really is the best Tax program out here.
What's great about it: When you know the information, all you need do is plug it in where TT tells you to.
What's not so great: If TT detects a discrepancy, it doesn't tell you how to fix it in clear, simple english.

Casualty Losses
on June 25, 2014
Posted by: Swoof003
from Colorado Springs CO
When a casualty occurs in an area that is declared a Federal disaster area (eg, Black Forest Fire in Colorado Springs), then you do not have to take the 10 percent AGI deduction which TurboTax automatically takes. After consulting with my tax professional, I was advised not to deduct the 10 percent AGI from the loss. Furthermore, she told me that several tax programs have a button you click to declare whether or not your loss was in a Federally declared disaster area. TurboTax had no such button, so the program automatically took the 10 percent deduction. Not good!
What's great about it: Easy
What's not so great: Not Accurate

Working with State Tax Forms
on June 27, 2014

It's like if you don't E File the State tax and pay the fee you get penalized by making it difficult to print a copy to paper file.
What's not so great: Difficult to print if not E-filing
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
