Sparks Me A Refund
on September 2, 2014

Turbo Has Been MY Choice of Tax Guide, for more years than I can even remember. It Has Been a true friend to my family of 7. We Depend on its arrival in the early months of the year. WE use its Expertise till April 16th, Hoping we hit the right combination for a "Refund". We then Put it away till the next year. While we all await its Brother or Sisters arrival again in early January. We Admit that come April 16th we Celebrate joyously if it has managed to "Spark A Refund" for one of us or ALL of US. Thank You so much for your Exstremly easy Visits, and when you go away and leave us with Refunds. WOW you Make The Next Visit just a lot NICER. Laughing to the Bank in my State...The Easy Way & a lot cheaper than a CPA
What's great about it: Guides Me Thru
What's not so great: Some Repeating
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved, I bought or sold investments

Supporting Details unavailable
on September 2, 2014
Posted by: CCC3rd
from Belmont, MA
Most often, when I see a number in a box on a form and want to know where it came from, TurboTax won't show me. The "Supporting Details" command in the Edit menu is grayed out. The unavailability of Supporting Details has wasted a LOT of my time and caused a lot of aggravation. A few years ago, this command worked. Please get it working again.
Also a.w.o.l. are readily available government instructions. These used to be available, too.
What's great about it: Does the job
What's not so great: Less helpful than it could be (and used to be)

TurboTax (TT) is promising software
on September 3, 2014

Since beginning filing USG taxes in 1962 we've always done our joint filing carefully by hand. In 2012 we began trying to use TT (for CY 2011) and finally got output we could hand-correct and land-mail (1040 and attachments). It was frustrating and took longer than doing by hand; we had similar tho somewhat better experience for CY 2012; our CY 2013 product and process was much improved tho we never mastered the final e-filing and still resorted to surface mail. We will go at it again for CY 2014.
The problems we have are much of our making as we always forward-pay estimated taxes and then don't complete 1040 until Aug or Sept..most online and telephone support has been taken down, left w/ only 'community help'.
What's great about it: We appreciate TT's ease of loading forms, explanations of IRS regs, computational capabilities, and its print output.
What's not so great: We've not mastered intricacies of e-filing; the logic relating Easy Steps with Form 1040 is often opaque

Windows version better than on-line

Be careful if you are doing taxes late for prior years. When importing from other accounts, TurboTax will always import the current year, even if that's the wrong year.
When entering data for home office expenses, such as utilities and house repairs, be sure to keep your numbers handy after you calculate them, because TurboTax will need you to re-enter the same numbers multiple times, once for each business that has a home office deduction.
Remember, if you over contributed to an HSA and paid tax penalty that you need to under-contribute the following year or else TurboTax will repeat the same penalty in every subsequent year. This warning is not present anywhere in the program.
What's great about it: Imports from prior year, and from on-line accounts
What's not so great: Entered same data multiple times for home office.

Purchases/sales of publicly traded partnerships are reported by brokerage houses on 1099's, often downloaded straight to Turbotax, but K-1s reflect adjustments to basis, which need to be made manually on Forms 8949, whuch can only be done through the override button. These overrides then show up on Turbo Tax as errors. But the true error is in NOT making the adjustments. I suggest trying to improve the Turbo Tax reporting system to better handle this complex area.

2103 Home & Business
on September 6, 2014

The past few years I've been dealing with my mother's estate and inheriting a rental house. I stopped renting it in 2012 and sold it in 2013 and it was difficult to get the right things entered in TurboTax Home and Business to recapture depreciation and ensure the correct basis. Also, the support community was non-existent after April 15th, so those of us who filed for extensions found that we were alone with no one to answer questions.
What's great about it: Easy to use, remembers data from prior year, frequent software updates
What's not so great: Hard to enter complex scenarios for sale of rental house
Pros: I bought or sold investments
