Saved My Bacon, As Usual

My wife opened a new business in 2013, making our tax situation much more complicated than ever before. We filed an extension knowing it would be challenging to complete our return, and then I procrastinated until nearly hitting the October 15 extension date. Although it took me a few days of receipt-sifting and Excel cranking to get everything prepared, it only took me a single day to get the return itself completed, finding us a tax refund due to education credits even though we had a negative net income for the year due to the business losses. Short of hiring a CPA, TurboTax is by far the best solution to getting your taxes done smoothly, quickly, and accurately.
What's great about it: Rather thorough interview process walks you through.
What's not so great: Brings up omissions during review and error check that would seem to be catchable during initial data entry.

Easy to Follow Instructions; Easy to Use

I have used TurboTax for more than a decade. It is easy to follow and it provides helpful tips if you need them. IRS forms and guidelines are just a mouse click away. It calculates your tax owed or refund due as you work through your return. Peace of mind is important with this kind software. I trust TurboTax to be correct in its calculations. I can rest easy once my return is filed.
My only frustration is that when you return to add information to a portion of the return you have already worked on, you then have to progress through anything you already worked on after that section and re-answer the same questions. (Thankfully, it does save any figures you already entered.) I would love it if there was a button you click on that would take you back to where you left off. Otherwise, a great product.
What's great about it: Intuitive, logical progression through return, easy answers a click away if you have questions, easy eFile, error check
What's not so great: If you have to return to an item, software won't skip over items already entered when you resume entry
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Makes my most hated job a lot more bearable.

I dislike all book-keeping and especially hate doing my taxes, so the fact that TurboTax even makes it bearable means it's really a pretty good product. At one time I paid an accountant to do my taxes, but now I use TurboTax and it takes about the same amount of time (most of the time is just collecting the documents you need) and it's a lot cheaper.
The questions are generally pretty clear, and I especially like being able to switch to the "forms" view so that I can see what the program is doing with my numbers.
What's great about it: When I get sleepy and make mistakes, TurboTax catches them.
What's not so great: I still have to keep good books for my business and remember where I put my W2 forms.

I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of using Turbo Tax since my status is complicated by that fact that I work internationally.

Turbo Tax

I like Turbo Tax however in an effort for the consumer to do more electronic filing, then the state filing should be free. It should be included in the cost of the product and not a separate fee.
What's great about it: Easy to follow instructions especially for a seasoned tax preparer
What's not so great: State electronic filing requirement is not free
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Submitted my return for 2013; return was rejected due to 2012 Returns had to mail not e-file. Screen prompt told me what to do, resubmitted; Fed and State was accepted quickly. Never had that happen before, always recommend Electronic Filing!
