A Complex Tax Return Made Easy
on October 15, 2014

Self employed with auto, travel expenses, office in the home, asset depreciation, social security partially taxable, SE tax and SE health insurance deduction all make for a complex tax return. Turbo Tax guides me to each taxable item and each deductible expense. The software reviews for any missing tax reducing deduction or election and, if any are found, takes me to the the place in the return to make beneficial changes. I've used Turbo Tax for years and will continue doing so. I highly recommend it.
What's great about it: Programmed assistance plus ability to preview each schedule and form insured accuracy.
What's not so great: No cons worth mentioning.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

To darn expensive

The error checking was not consistent in the errors each time I ran the check. It would say no errors and then find new things that were missing on the next check even though I had not made any changes between error checks. The reporting of details for the stock MLP's is still not refined for ease of use or help screens. The charge for the H&B version and the extra states and the e-filing rates do not seem to be inline with the competition. May need to move to them next year for a better value.
What's great about it: the glitches were fewer this year
What's not so great: the cost for states & e-filing are too high.
Pros: I moved, I bought or sold investments

Love the step by step

Have been using Turbo Tax for years. I love the step by step and how it walks you through every element of your return. But I don't think there should be a difference between accessing prior year returns using desktop or online versions. Turbo Tax needs to find a way to gather and keep their customers information through a secure data base over the years. They don't make it clear that you will have very limited access to prior year returns if you file using the online versions. You only realize it when you log into your account and see many years of returns missing.
What's great about it: Easy to Follow
What's not so great: Past returns unavailable; Desktop vs online
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Easy to do Great Tool

Good software and fulfills all my needs. I wish I can print selected pages during preparation for my use. One can only print the final return. I do not know why this is not possible.
What's great about it: Easy to do
What's not so great: Unable to print selected pages during preparation. This would greatly help for me to process the return.

Love it.
I am a convert. I've never enjoyed taxes. Finally have now.
In the amount of time it took me to prepare for and deal with my accountant...I did this.
What's great about it: Cost effective, intuitive, friendly
What's not so great: a couple of glitches with error fixing - hard to get a clear explanation
Pros: I moved

Better but Still Not the Best It Can Be
on October 15, 2014

Whereas there were no noticeable improvements from '11 to '12, there were from '12 to '13. More information reliably transferred from one year's returns to the next, but there were still some times that it didn't, that we had to go hunting for it on the old return. There were more explanations & definitions, which is exptremely helpful, but there were still undefined, unexplained sections, and we're of the mind that every page with every tax term and question should have a popup box of informative, helpful information. Lastly, the user is not told where to find all the information either on the previous year's returns or in the user's personal records. The user should always be directed exactly to where something should be. The aforementioned cons are the worst in the review section where the software looks for errors in your current return but then doesn't always tell you exactly where to find it (for instance, with a button that takes you directly to that page of questions).
What's great about it: No noticeable improvements from '11 to '12 but there were from '12 to '13: more transferred & more explanations
What's not so great: Info transfer inconsistent, so not all that should transfer does; not every tax term defined; not told where to find all

Form 8949
on October 15, 2014

I had serious trouble figuring out how to make the capital gain and loss sheets work and carry to the form 8949 and Schedule D. This was not self evident, and I had to manually input or override information until I finally got it to work. The answer in your help line to the actual question was unresponsive, it just said enter the data. Duh, well how.
But when I did get it to work, it was a great timesaver. By the way I am a CPA (public company stuff) and have been using TurboTax for many years, so if I had issues I think it could be a common problem that needs some enhancement.
What's great about it: Allows you to enter multiple transactions from a broker and mail in detail to IRS on Form 8453
What's not so great: Turbotax explanations and help answers were very poor and not explicative at all.
