Complex taxes made simple

I've been using TurboTax since 1999. It keeps improving as my taxes get more complicated. I've often thought about hiring a tax accountant, but TurboTax always seems to find ways to make the whole process more accurate and simple. I can see the whole picture quickly, and the pdf outputs are great.
What's great about it: Year after year it keeps getting better!
What's not so great: Can't think of any, but I've got nothing to compare against.

Good and Bad of Turbo Tax

Turbo Tax is a wonderful tax software. I used to work for the IRS and used their software to do my taxes when I worked for them. I can actually say that Turbo Tax is every bit as easy as the internal program with the IRS.
I've used it for years and will continue to do so.
I suggest to anyone that has anything close to a difficult return to purchase the Tax Audit defenders when filing. I'm currently using the with an audit of my 2012 return and since I got audited in 2012, I'm sure I'll probably get tagged again in 2013. I haven't completed the audit so I don't want to rate the overall protection, but so far it's been great and taken a lot of stress away worrying about it.
What's great about it: Ease of doing the overall return and the Tax Audit Defender
What's not so great: Figuring out how to do multiple Schedule Cs

Great until the review

The program should lead you to the spot where a problem exists and be more specific about how it can be fixed. It took me over an hour to correct the two issues myself, which made my return late.
What's great about it: keeps me up to date, tracks complex information
What's not so great: review process left me in the dark
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Not happy that I could not figure out how to show my 1099-S and that the advice was to check with the IRS. So now I will have to do an amended return. When I tried to check to see if my return was sent I keep getting forced to do this review. I hope this did not hold up my return.
In order to revise items it is cumbersome to have to go through all the prompts again.

A Step Above

We have a small business, and kids in college. With Turbo Taxx, I am able to capture all of the business expenses, personal deductions, and education credits.
What's great about it: The step-by-step interview is a lot easier than trying to follow all the instructions in the forms.
What's not so great: Sometimes questions came up that did not apply to my situation.

As former retired CPA I found it very easy to move to detail support and suggested information directly at the program point I was working with at the time. DOES THE JOB!
What's great about it: Great options to haveguide or work alone
What's not so great: It took too many clicks to move around looking at previous input.

Down to the Wire & Made It!

Working with numbers all day every day is my 9-5, so a product like Turbo Tax (used for the past 10 years) has made filing taxes a bit easier and not such a cumbersome task.
I would like to see field hyperlinks added to the final forms during the review process that would expand the detail behind a field total. After a few days of loading in information, I sometimes forget where I have entered figures, especially when I have 2 separate businesses using a home office and 2 vehicles used in both businesses. It can get overwhelming.
All in all, I am finding the product gets better and easier to use year over year.

What's great about it: Every year the product gets easier to use. Prefilled information from prior years is very helpful.
What's not so great: Some of the help menus/additional information can get confusing.

Surprised

Was unable to enter capital gains from sale of real estate. System would not pull up that section. Stated IRS had not finished their forms yet and to check back later. Now I will have to file an amended return whenever I figure out how to access what I need. First time I have been disappointed with TurboTax in 10 years.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Investment income segment not available
Pros: I bought or sold investments
