Smooth

I have used TurboTax for multiple years and have never been disappointed. As a self-employed clinician with out-of-state interests and complex income streams, TurboTax makes complying with the complicated quagmire of federal regulations simple. I'm a believer!
What's great about it: Thorough, Intuitive, Logical
What's not so great: Needs to explain and not just identify mistakes

Great Program

Struggled with the Stock section. The 1099-B's did not match. Cost basis is confusing.
I thought you could write off unemployment travel expenses, but the program never addressed this.
What's great about it: Great for basics

Mostly Great

I needed to enter some K-1 info. I inadvertently started to fill in a partnership form. I spent hours and could not find a way to delete the form. I went on line and tons of other people had the same problem and could not erase the form.
I could not e-file because of this error.

Great Experience for First-Timer
on October 16, 2014

Haven't used tax software since the mid-90s (MacIntax). TurboTax has been a positive experience for me considering my taxes have become a bit more complicated over the last 20 years.
Happy to get suggestions for deductions I didn't know (or didn't have time to know) were available to me. And the combined experience behind TurboTax brand instilled confidence that I wouldn't have had going it alone.
Just a few minor suggestions for future releases:
Not much under the "Preferences" pull-down. I would like to choose to see the decimal amounts (even if the forms are filed rounded to the dollar.)
I came out better with home office deduction using the standard square footage method (instead of actual expenses) but had to do it both ways to learn this. It would be cool if TurboTax would suggest this (after user inputs actual expenses) to give the taxpayer the best deduction.
And as mentioned above, I just had a hard time jumping back & forth to different areas quickly. (Maybe I just didn't know the technique. If so, my apologies & please disregard this comment.)
All told, I'm happy with my first-time experience. The software was more than worth its cost, and I am probably hooked for life!
What's great about it: Suggested deductions I didn't know I was eligible for
What's not so great: Not easy to jump around. Maybe I just didn't know how?

Mutual Fund Section Lacking
on October 16, 2014

from Memphis, TN
Last year (2013), I redeemed some shares of a mutual fund acquired in around 56 lots. I made 4 redemptions in 2013. I also made redemptions in 2012.
Because my mutual fund company did not calculate the cost basis for me, I had to enter every lot acquisition and previous sale BY HAND. And I had to do this for each sale, instead of one time. One entry for the first sale with a message "Is this the same fund you sold before?" query would have saved me HOURS. As it was, I had to enter 158 data points for each sale - 632 separate data points in all.
Furthermore, TurboTax did NOT import this SAME DATA from my 2012 return, and there was NO WAY to copy it over.
This is not very acceptable.
What's great about it: Fine, if you don't need a cost basis calculation.
What's not so great: Cost Basis Calculator needs a lot of help
Pros: I had a baby, I moved, I bought or sold investments

small bug trips up return filing
on October 17, 2014

from St. Paul MN
There was a small bug that did not allow 1099-INT worksheet fields to carry forward to state return (at least MN form M1W) such that e-file of the state return was prevented. The whole return would not pass error correction until that field was filled which only an override could accomplish but over-rides are verbotten for e-filing. This is a HUGE catch22 for such a small bug in the program.
What's great about it: overall - still a pretty good tax program
What's not so great: that over-rides completely block e-filing
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I am retired and according to the SS statement should not be paying any income tax. Our total income came to $26,446. Took me long time to figure out that no matter what, I ended up with 341 in tax. So i finally paid on the 15th. Turbo info said there were no problems with the forms. Gave my information, CC on visa and send it in. Thought I was done. Now it tells me it did not file my return, and there were problems with the information. I am now in a mess and will never use your system again.
What's great about it: used for years. Always ok.
What's not so great: This was a mess
