Mutual Fund Section Lacking
on October 16, 2014

from Memphis, TN
Last year (2013), I redeemed some shares of a mutual fund acquired in around 56 lots. I made 4 redemptions in 2013. I also made redemptions in 2012. Because my mutual fund company did not calculate the cost basis for me, I had to enter every lot acquisition and previous sale BY HAND. And I had to do this for each sale, instead of one time. One entry for the first sale with a message "Is this the same fund you sold before?" query would have saved me HOURS. As it was, I had to enter 158 data points for each sale - 632 separate data points in all.
Furthermore, TurboTax did NOT import this SAME DATA from my 2012 return, and there was NO WAY to copy it over.
This is not very acceptable.
What's great about it: Fine, if you don't need a cost basis calculation.
What's not so great: Cost Basis Calculator needs a lot of help
Pros: I had a baby, I moved, I bought or sold investments

small bug trips up return filing
on October 17, 2014

from St. Paul MN
There was a small bug that did not allow 1099-INT worksheet fields to carry forward to state return (at least MN form M1W) such that e-file of the state return was prevented. The whole return would not pass error correction until that field was filled which only an override could accomplish but over-rides are verbotten for e-filing. This is a HUGE catch22 for such a small bug in the program.
What's great about it: overall - still a pretty good tax program
What's not so great: that over-rides completely block e-filing
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I am retired and according to the SS statement should not be paying any income tax. Our total income came to $26,446. Took me long time to figure out that no matter what, I ended up with 341 in tax. So i finally paid on the 15th. Turbo info said there were no problems with the forms. Gave my information, CC on visa and send it in. Thought I was done. Now it tells me it did not file my return, and there were problems with the information. I am now in a mess and will never use your system again.
What's great about it: used for years. Always ok.
What's not so great: This was a mess

E-filing

The program tells you that you can use either AGI or an electronic pin and then when you fill in AGI it still asks you for an electronic pin. In my case although I submitted my return before the Oct. 15, 2013 deadline last year the IRS didn't have a record of receiving it until Dec 19, 2013 and processing it until Feb 2014. Thus the proper AGI for the computer was 0. I have spent hours trying to correct this and the first 3 representatives from Turbo Tax were of no help. The fourth tried his best before telling me that I should call the IRS.
Also the 2013 program last year allowed the entry of my prior city Long Beach even though the correct zip code was entered for my new address in Rancho Cucamonga.
What's great about it: seems easy
What's not so great: has flaws

Acknowledge and FIX the bug with MARK ESTIMATED
on October 17, 2014
Posted by: Anonymous
There is a bug with "Mark Estimated" Many users complained of similar problems on the forum, none of which received an appropriate response. The bottom line comes down to IF you mark some fields as "Estimated", and they subsequently flow to other parts of your return, they DO NOT get clear from all areas where they flowed too. This causes an error "Blah blah - is marked as estimated, correct the amount and select unmark estimated", However the item IS NOT marked as estimated and you do not have the option to unmark estimated. This prevents you from efiling. I had to go back and recreate 2 schedule C's as well as their supporting details in order to fix the problem. I WILL NEVER USE mark estimated again. I have been a TurboTax user for 15+ years, and never had as frustrating an experience as I had this year.
What's not so great: Had to completely redo a lot of work due to bug

GREAT!!!!!

I have used TurboTax since 2004 and because of this software I have saved hundreds, even thousands of dollars in CPA fees alone. Even when I had a very complicated tax situation, I was able to successfully do my taxes with this product. I am very, very satisfied and will continue using TurboTax as long as I have to file taxes!
What's great about it: Easy to use. Inexpensive.
What's not so great: Some explanations are confusing.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved, I bought or sold investments

Helpful!

If it could take you to the place where the error is, that would be helpful. It's difficult to navigate to find where the error is to correct it.
What's great about it: I like how it takes you through every step to make it easy.
What's not so great: I wish there were better instructions when there are errors.
Pros: I moved
