I was a first time filer and college student filing on my own. I am grateful for Turbo Tax for how direct and easy it made the filing process. One thing I do wish is that you are aware of the possible charges ahead of time for individual states and then the additional filing charge. Even still, this is quality stuff for the same amount or much less than what hired help would charge. I recommend this for any self-capable person with confidence about their finances and the correct paperwork available. If you have w-2 and receipts for your deductions (or, even without the receipts you can make due if you don't claim those deductions), TurboTax if for you!
What's great about it: Easy and to the point.
What's not so great: For first timers, get deluxe if you expect to recieve useful help
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved
I have used Turbo Tax for years. This year I am not happy. Errors were flagged in forms I had no use for, i.e., sale of property which was not done. I DID NOT SELL ANY PROPERTY. It is nearly midnight and I have been on this for hours. You used to have a good program.
The process gets easier each year. This year I had to submit a State return for the first time. TurboTax made the process quick and painless. I was able to select the state, purchase and fill out the form, and at the end - submit the Federal and the State forms online. I love it!
What's great about it: Simple instructions, including for State returns
The returns were straight forward. The program is fairly simple to work through and easy to understand. However, do not assume what you will pay for Turbotax by what the website says. The website is misleading...they clearly do not disclose the cost of the state tax returns upfront which obviously makes many customers believe it is included with the advertised price. Thus, it ends up being a lot more expensive than you initially thought....not very nice. Sorry Turbotax, but I will be going back to H&R Block next year.
