BASIC, 2014, skip EIN

Input the W-2 info, get to the EIN. Apparently the software is supposed to be smart enough to find the complete employer info from only the EIN. Hah! Twice the computer froze had to be restarted. I even uninstalled TurboTax after the first time & re-installed. The answer is to bypass the initial EIN, and then type all the info manually. For years, I have used an Excel spreadsheet to do my taxes. After trying turbo-tax, I would say it probably took more time than the alternative. Namely, copy-&-paste the numbers, one-by-one, from the Excel file to the IRS-provided PDF files.
What's great about it: led thru the entire process in a logical way.
What's not so great: EIN is a BIG problem -- computer crashes!!!
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Better than an accountant

Instructions are explicit, but could be more so. For example, my husband's retirement 1099-R had the right gross distribution on line 1, but 2b said "Taxable amount not determined." As a result, 2a (Taxable amount) was blank. Did the program use the amount on 1 or the blank #$0) on 2a? Are we cheating, i.e., pretending he received no retirement distribution?
From the summary, I'm guessing the program did use the right pension distribution, but I wish the explanation made it clear.
What's great about it: Guides you through everything
What's not so great: Could be a little clearer about what was included in income
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Did I really save money?

First off. I bought the TurboTax. That's money spent already.
Then it tells me I needed to file State Tax for more additional charges, then another charge for filing the state tax report.
I don't think I saved a dime here.... ALL GONE.
What's great about it: It gave me the excitement of saving some money.
What's not so great: This charges that charges... you charged me more than half of what I will be getting for the return.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Used Turbox tax since it came out, it has gotten easier over the years. Like the questions, but could skip some that are not necessary looking at previous years.
What's great about it: questions are great
What's not so great: review easier
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Turbo Tax is NOT Taxing!

I have been using Turbo Tax since 1998. It is easy to use, accurate, and makes the unbelievably complex, out-dated, inefficient, bureaucratic, special-interest tax code somewhat bearable. It is nearly impossible for an individual to navigate our tax code without Turbo Tax. If there was a law mandating each member of congress and the President complete their own taxes without the aid of a lawyer, tax consultant, tax preparer, or tax software, the movement to simplify the tax code would be overwhelming to the benefit of millions of tax payers. Since such a law will never happen, THANK GOD for Turbo Tax!
What's great about it: Accuracy, Ease of Use, eFile Capability
What's not so great: Does not interface with EFTPS

Generally program works well for my purpose. The filing and printing section has changed that now requires extra steps to print. Now I need to save a File Copy in pdf then open that file to print the hard copy and also do the same thing to get an official TaxReturn to sent to the IRS. Note: I don't trust the IRS to keep my data from hackers therefore I don't E-File.
What's great about it: like that it auto input last years data & step by step guidance
What's not so great: trouble with rental property input - question did not lead me to Sch E
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Despite all "expert" advice I could not complete this without ERRORS. Repeatedly insisted I enter a valid ZIP and Payer number even though I entered all 9s
It worked ok in pervious years so what's new.
I had to file my mail - errors and all!
