Turbo Tax is solid.

Turbo Tax is solid. I used to do taxes professionally and this program is good for the professional and someone who just wants to do their own return.
What's great about it: All good
What's not so great: All good

Best Tax Software
on March 26, 2014
Posted by: JILTexas
Each year the product improves significantly. I have worked with accounting software packages for decades and I definitely would say this is the easiest tax software to use. I will continue to use Turbotax because I can trust it to produce an accurate tax return for me EASILY.
What's great about it: Turbotax continues to provide a superior product -- and I'm an accountant.
What's not so great: Why doesn't the return get saved as you progress through it?
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

too much emphasis on nickname
What's great about it: easy to use windows and steps
What's not so great: seem like a lot of steps that could be clicked thru; too many pop-ups for the state tax & updates that I don't want

Make forms update process work
on March 26, 2014

It's fantastic the way you use all the worksheets and options to get the customer his lowest refund. Five stars for your core business.
What doesn't work is the forms update. Your program doesn't allow me to file because the K-1 is not available. In the three years that I've been using your program its never been available; yet my K-1 from a professional accountant matches your form. I want to file electronically but because of this non-error I'm not allowed to do so. When I try to update the forms it always fails.
What's great about it: Great the way you use every worksheet to get the best refund
What's not so great: forms update has not worked for 3 years

I've used TurboTax since 2010 and find it an almost perfect product, even for someone who's moved, changed jobs and lives overseas.
What's great about it: Very user friendly
What's not so great: Could not manage to download stock transactions
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved, I bought or sold investments

Tax time
on March 27, 2014

I like using Turbo Tax, have used it several years. This year we have a rental property and was surprised that we had to file with the state of Florida. I purchased the state program and it shows a zero refund but hasn't said anything about filing. What have I done wrong?

Turbo tax makes it pretty easy, however, if you don't own a small business and don't take business deductions, but receive multiple 1099s for small amounts from publishers and academic institutions as would an academic, turbo tax wants you to purchase "home and business" when all they could do is clarify some of the questions.
I also had a problem with form 5695 for "Residential Energy Credits." Neither Turbo Tax nor the IRS makes it clear how to receive the full $500 tax credit your HVAC company tell you you are due if you use qualifying systems. The questions asked on the IRS form are not straight forward, but Turbo Tax could help lots with some clarification.
Also, Turbo Tax let me import the same Fidelity account twice. Turbo Tax didn't catch this mistake, but I'm glad that I did. Made the difference between a refund and a payment.
What's great about it: calculations, step by step, importing info from financial inst
What's not so great: how basic edition deals with 1099s, would like more definitions

Personal Review of TT for TY 2013
on March 27, 2014
Posted by: DougBFLORIDA
For the second year, I notice that TT did not automatically guide me to my rental property expenses in the step-by-step mode. It picks up the income from the 1099-MISC filed by my management comany, but nonetheless fails as noted above. I've used TT for MANY years and only in the last two or so have I observed this failing. I believe it's an intentional effort to guide the user to order the much more expensive version of TT that claims to be essential for rental property. I don't believe that to be the case.
What's great about it: Fairly quick, completes all forms as needed.
What's not so great: Failed to automatically guide me to income property expenses
