Terrible Product
on April 5, 2014

I could not find where to enter my direct deposit info so i went to the help button. after seeing a bunch of unhepful questions i tried again. it said go to the file button and if you don;t have a file button then there are 3 little white lines in the upper left. The file button still does not take you to a place to enter your bank's info and there are no white lines.
Also I had to mail my return due to fraud and your choice is to do state tax which i don;t have or click file now. they never tell you if you click file now whether or not it will send it off electronically immediately. i was able to print, but now I guess I will have to get my return via uS mail.
Turbo Tax is terrible. They should at the very least provide a chat option to help you immediately since they have no problem selling millions of their producet. Maybe it is fine if you don't have a question, but they should at least give you the option of entering direct deposit info. If that option is only available to e-filers they should let you know and not expect you to be psychic. I will nver again buy antoher turbo tax.
What's great about it: None
What's not so great: no help

USAA sent corrected 1099 form. All other earlier applicable info from USAA entered automatically. USAA person said corrected info was transmitted to TurboTax. Was unable to find it and get correction made automatically.
What's not so great: Unable to get corrected 1099 info to enter automatically

Avoid Free Tax Return S/W - you get what you pay
on April 5, 2014

I used a free online package last year, reputable, but it had errors in the code. I used TaxCut two years ago, and this year went with Turbo. I'm a Turbo person from now on. Easy and pain free....even with manually inputting my personal data again from scratch. Thanks Intuit!
What's great about it: Easy to fill, file and pay!

TurboTax Can Do Much Better...
on April 5, 2014

I have been using TurboTax with the so-called EasyStep process to do my taxes for two decades. This year I had my least satisfactory experience.
First, some issues that have bothered me for years: (1) The Personal Property tax section refers to Boats and Planes, but does not mention cars/trucks. Why?! (2) The SEP IRA deduction is buried deep in the menu for business income, and unless you look for it carefully, you will never find it. (3) The constant effort to upsell the customer into buying additional products/services is VERY annoying.
Now for where my 2013 Tax Year experience was most frustrating. I had to report capital losses on transactions for two different mutual funds. Both funds provided the statutory information in a clear manner on Form 1099-B, clearly separating short-term and long-term losses, and clearly showing the information for Boxes D and E for Form 8949, Part II. TurboTax's EasyStep never even asked about Boxes D and E. If I had not realized this major omission, I would have missed major items (deductions) on my tax return. Ultimately, after much research on the Internet, I was able to figure out how to get around the problem in an ad hoc manner in TurboTax. I am shocked that a company that prides itself on delighting users would mess up so badly.
What's great about it: Generally easy to use
What's not so great: Some major glitches

Big Help
on April 5, 2014
Posted by: Backho
It would help if you would not change the software so much from year to year. Sometimes the language of explanations and requests for information are difficult to understand. Most of us users are not accountants, so we don't know the jargon. This year we ran into a problem where data was entered that was bogus, and we couldn't go back to get rid of it.
What's great about it: Easy to load, easy to follow
What's not so great: Confusing sometimes, difficult to edit
Pros: I bought or sold investments

This version is perfect for me. I don't require a complicated and extensive program since I just have a couple of W2s, mortgage interest, & some charitable contributions. I like that e-file comes with it.
