Got the Job Done

I had my husband and my father to help me with the tougher questions. But, mainly if I hadn't heard of it, I didn't have it or didn't need to file it.
What's great about it: Fairly easy, not too complicated, my finances are simple, and so was my tax return
What's not so great: I had a little trouble understanding some linguistics, nothing a bit of dictionary diving couldn't fix though.
Pros: I moved

Tax Preparation Nightmare
on April 14, 2014

from Rochelle, IL
We've used TurboTax for several years but this year all I had was trouble with it. If I left and came back later to continue, info I entered earlier was missing. And yes, I did save both when I closed the file and periodically while entering the info. I think a new PDF file was being created when I tried to print forms. However each time I tried to open the PDF I received a message that an error occurred and file could not be found. This year completing our taxes with TurboTax was definitely not a pleasant experience. In years past my experience has always been positive but if this was the 1st time I used it...it would certainly be my last.
What's great about it: Easy to understand
What's not so great: Easy to lose what you've entered

I've been a Turbo Tax customer for many years and it seems to get better each year. It also seems to get easier to use each year as well. Great product.
What's great about it: Easy to follow instructions
What's not so great: Don;t know of any
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Make it easier to bypass the state tax as Tennessee doesn't require the "state tax" portion....Thanks!

Works But Always Some Context Corrections Needed
on April 14, 2014
Posted by: JoeTaxez
from Ohio
Importing info from a previous year always ends up in out of context corrections that must be made during the searching for errors phase. This happens to me every year and always leaves me guessing.
A worksheet from a previous year gets imported and then I am asked to fill in missing information even though that information may not be necessary this year and even though I did not indicate the need for the information in the deductions questions screens, for example.
Often there is no help available for these DEMANDED corrections and no skip button to correct what I do know how to correct and no back button to go to the original input screens to try to figure things out. I have only the option to enter a number and choose the equivalent of "okay."
Since the program is prompting me all along the way, it is unfair to throw these out of context corrections at me with no way to be educated about what they mean and no way to zero them out.
If I do click through them and go back to the actual original input screens, often the thing I am asked to correct is "hidden" under layers of other requested information, and it takes time to figure it out, especially when it was not even an option I needed to fill in in the first place.
In short, there is some ghost information from a previous year's file that there is no easy way for a novice to root out and remove or even know it is there.
What's great about it: Software helps me complete my taxes independently and relatively easily
What's not so great: Importing info from previous year creates issues when software searches for errors
