I haven't used TurboTax since 2009, and it's much better now in many ways. The instructions and short explanations for all the topics are much clearer. The Help Center answers aren't as helpful as they could be. For example, when I tried to enter "various" as the date for acquisition of contributed stocks (charitable contribution deduction), I was unable to do that and there was no satisfactory reason given -- because the IRS forms clearly allow that entry. I was completely disappointed by the messages that I got when I had completed the process and was ready to review my return. The messages said that the IRS forms weren't yet available. I had to enter many fields and queries asking to get updates when the forms were available. Query why, when I entered by email address at the beginning of the process, I was not given a link to update the TurboTax disc much earlier in the process. But that's my only complaint.
What's great about it: Clearer instructions and helpful messages
What's not so great: multiple "forms not ready yet" messages
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved
I started using TT more than a decade ago. It's remained reasonably simple to use, but by this year, it seemed there was either an added charge or a "sales opportunity" around every corner.
When I started using it, one state return was included, now the cost of a state return, together with filing fees, ran to more than the cost of the basic package.
Next year I'm looking at competitors before buying.
What's great about it: Fairly simple creation of forms
What's not so great: Added costs -- state, filing fee, dunning for "protection"
I have a lot of stock transactions. Turbo tax is pushing me to upgrade. I have a background for this and I do not see the reasoning or need. I am made to feel that I am not doing the taxes in a proper manner. Please explain. I have been using Turbo Tax since 1998.
Turbo tax keeps getting better. The summaries of income and expense items were invaluable during my review of my taxes. I looked at all the categories and compared to previous years. It could not be simpler.
What's great about it: income and expense summary pages are great in reviewing my return and finding what I need to focus on
What's not so great: interview for personal information at begining is a little long
Very straight forward, easy to follow instructions. Especially liked summary comparisons of previous years entries for various categories. (Would like to see at least 3 year comparisons).
