I love using Turbo Tax. It is easy to use and saves us money since we have a easy return to do. I tried other programs and got confused. That's what happens when you try to say a few dollars.

TurboTax as consistent as always

I've used TT Basic for years; it's always served me well. Standard W2s, Schedule Cs, Itemized deductions, all handled cleanly. Now I've retired, W2s are being replaced by 1099-Rs, self-employed income and expenses, still all handled by TT Basic.
What's great about it: Provides all the guidance needed by virtually everyone for federal returns
What's not so great: State return prep is too expensive, and state efiles should be included with the federal returns
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

This was my first year filiing for taxes as an independent and was a little nervous on how to do it. TurboTax was a great experiences that allowed me to qualify for a great return and was very simple. As long as you have all the correct paperwork on hand, taxes are very easy to complete with this program..and I even used the Basic edition.
What's great about it: Simple, Fast, Affordable
What's not so great: Repetitive
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Business deductions a pain
on February 9, 2014

I wanted to write off a computer that I purchased specifically for my Software Engineering and consulting business. (headquartered out of my house) However, Turbo tax forces me to declare my home as a business office and demands that I write a portion of it off as an additional part of my business deduction(s).
All attempts not to get into long term depreciation of my home proved fruitless. I was forced to simply throw away my deduction for an expensive new computer System, and to then delete the forms.
RECOMMENDATION: It would nice if TurboTax would produce an itemized report of income and expenses entered like the average individual does when gathering information for data entry ( this way we might not forget an item). Or maybe it could produce a blank, itemized, Husband-Wife- Children "columnar" work sheet which would permit gathering information in the same order TurboTax asks for it. ( This way we might know in advance that we should separate eye glasses from other medical expenses)
What's great about it: Does the math and fills out the forms.
What's not so great: As a once a year user, the software is always difficult to roam arround when checking various topics.
