Perfect Way for Taxes
on September 11, 2014

I really enjoy using the step-by-step process for doing my taxes. Turbo Tax has really nailed down how to do this with a great program. I wouldn't do my taxes any other way.
I consider the user-interface used up to several years ago preferably to the present version. I used to be able to navigate back and forward to directly to the forms or data already processed. The present "improved" version is more awkward to back up or go forward to review & edit.
TurboTax seemed to do everything with relative ease except handle a capital gain I had due to a negative outside basis on one of my partnerships. Admittedly, this requirement to bring a negative outside basis up to zero with a capital gain is awfully obscure.
What's great about it: Did all calculations correctly
What's not so great: Put an unneeded 5329 into my return (it won't hurt me)
I use TT each year so I don't have to do it by hand, but I think it might take just as long to go through all of the questions. It is convenient so I keep using it.
What's great about it: accuracy, efiles, retains information to roll forward each year
What's not so great: too many questions, makes it take longer than it should
I had a difficult time printing a return that fit letter size format. I had a dificlut time getting to printing a form to file by mail as EVERYTHING is geared towards e-file. I didn't care for the light blue buttons with white letters as they are hard to read. Go with dark blue for better contrast. I have had better experience with Turbo Tax in previous years. And stop making me scroll to the bottom of a group after I'm done with a catagory, like 9 out o0f 10 deductions. Just go back to where I left off. Maybe next year will be better.
What's great about it: Walk through questions.
What's not so great: Some questions did not give me a good choice of answers that fit my situation..
Always appreciated is the carry-forward information. It is one of the most helpful features.
The rental income option did not seem to be able to choose the residential option and 15 day non-taxable rental income choice.
The 1040ES worksheet almost worked until a change was tried. Then, the program locked in the previous choice and would not allow any further revisions of the estimated payment. Very disappointing.
What's great about it: Both forms and help route
What's not so great: 1040 ES was a failure.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
