No Linux Support
on April 4, 2014

I've been using TurboTax and its predecessor since the mid '90's and it has saved me money, but with the demise of Windows XP I will be parting ways as TurboTax has steadfastly refused to offer a Linux (or for that matter, a Java) version of TurboTax. It is willing to provide a product that is close to Linux in its Mac Version, which might be as small a niche version as Linux, but they'll never know until they try. I think software developers believe that Linux users verge on being software pirates or something. Truth is, A linux version can be sold as a binary .deb or .rpm file. Source files do not have to be included in the package. I believe TurboTas's management is just too "stuck in the mud" to be open minded and look at the potential in Linux users who are US tax filers. As I said, it doesn't have to be Linux, it could be a Java version. Java runs on all platforms so there would only be ONE platform to support.
What's great about it: Been Using it for Years
What's not so great: As Microsoft ages, I hate it more and more and TurboTax refuses to offer a Linux version

Keep my original answers for review!

The only problem I have is that I like to go back over my income taxes before submitting them to the IRS. In some sections it does not keep my original answer to some of the questions and I have to remember what I entered. I wish turbo tax would keep my answers to everything so that when I review I can also review the answers I originally put and not have to guess what was entered.
What's great about it: easy to use

Thanks for the Help!

I initially started my return with the Federal Free Edition but quickly ran into a problem with my HSA. The online chat with Cory_18 (I think this is correct??) was very helpful and I was able to finish my return. I was getting very upset with TurboTax because of some issues I had in the past, but this year turned out to be pretty easy and overall I was satisfied with my experience.
What's great about it: Online chat was very helpful
What's not so great: Was initially frustrated with Federal Free Edition

A Solid Product!

I have used TurboTax for many years. I am very pleased that the software makes gradual changes in content and user interface rather than what we have seen with other popular office software. I don't want to learn a new and needlessly convoluted user interface each year. Thank you for the consistency.
I like the fact that the basic version of TurboTax covers all of my tax purposes. I do not have buy a lot unnecessary features from higher priced products. It is a very good value.
I also like the features that keep track of my carryovers from year to year. It is very convenient.
I don't really have any complaints about the software.
What's great about it: Consistency in content and user interface from year to year
What's not so great: None

You really see benefits when using it year-after-year, as it "remembers" all previous information, including e.g. expenses that are depreciated over multiple years.
I had one problem this year, when I added state-return service (I should have bought it with that included). I got caught in a loop where it would keep sending me back to analyze for errors; closing and restarting TT didn't help, and I found some reports in the user forums about having to reinstall the program. Anyway, the next day it worked fine...
What's great about it: Easy to follow and seems comprehensive. Guarantees accuracy, which removes any doubts. Big benefits from using each year
What's not so great: Caught in a loop after adding state returns.
Pros: I bought or sold investments
