I consider the user-interface used up to several years ago preferably to the present version. I used to be able to navigate back and forward to directly to the forms or data already processed. The present "improved" version is more awkward to back up or go forward to review & edit.

Late Filing Penalty
on September 21, 2014

Unfortunately, for tax year 2013 I filed an extension but made no tax payment with it because I anticipated I would be getting a refund. Well, after completing my return, I found out I owed $190 in taxes. I hope I have understood the IRS Late Filing Penalty guidelines correctly. I was expecting the Turbo Tax software to automatically calculate the exact "Late Filing Penalty" amount. I think it is .5% x 190 x 6 months. I hope it's correct.
What's not so great: No automatic Late Filing Penalty/Fee calculation
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

I may need to fill out a Form 1245 from Form 4797? Turbo Tax REALLY NEEDS to calculate non-recaptured net losses!!!!
What's great about it: Relatively easy to use & follow
What's not so great: Turbo Tax REALLY NEEDS to calculate non-recaptured net losses!!!!

I received two schedule K-1's containing both business income and real estate rental income. The K-1's were prepared by the estate's CPA using professional tax software. Boxes 6 and 7 both have values.
The TT design asks me whether I have anything in boxes 6-9. Since TT only allows ONE of those boxes per K-1 worksheet, there should be a separate entry for 6,7,8 and 9. TT should NOT ALLOW me to select more than one of those and present an error message at that point.
The design is opaque since I CAN put numbers in 6 AND 7 when entering the data. I conclude that all is well. It's not until I run the federal check that I am told that TT requires separate worksheets. The user should be blocked from entering data in a way that the program does not support.
Thanks,
What's great about it: For homeowner use it's perfect, have used it for years
What's not so great: Schedule K-1 form 1041 boxes 6,7,8
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I have used Turbo tax for years and have appreciated the consistency of it. I would suggest speeding up the program as a target for future years.
What's great about it: consistency - I have used your company for years.
What's not so great: Slow.

I have used Turbo Tax for about 10 years now, and I am also a tax professional and familiar with a lot of tax software. TT does a good job, and I like 2013 better than a couple of the previous years. I don't like how the forms are treated as an after-thought, in my opinion. Navigation is better this year. Overall, an excellent product.
What's great about it: Thorough, and has good explanations if you click on them. I like being able to choose whether to navigate myself or not
What's not so great: Getting to the forms to view them and see what is going on is just too much trouble. Please make it easier.

Sch K-1

Overall, program does a good job with 35 Form 1065 Sch K-1 for Master Limited Partnership. However, the program does not do a good job with: (a) partial sale of units in a Master Limited Partnership (b) the distribution in excess of basis by a Master Limited Partnership and (c) the Foreign Tax Credit from a Master Limited Partnership. In addition need to add a worksheet that details how the Worldwide Gross Income is determined for Foreign Tax Credit purpose. It is hard to proof the number that the program provides in the Smart Sheet.
What's great about it: Handling 1065 K-1 very well
What's not so great: Foreign Tax Credt data from 1065 K-1 is hard to get into forms and it is hard to proof the Worldwide Gross Inccome
Pros: I bought or sold investments
