BEST 70-300MM LENS EVER!

after more then a year and thousands of photos later,i have to say i love this lens for just about everything! i use the 7d and took pics of dragonflies up close and the detail is amazing! i have to say everything close up to distant looks sharp at all focal lengths and wide open! by having the zoom ring at the end of the lens i think gives better balance and doesnt bother me at all! hand held shots at 300mm and 1/60th shutter speed are sharp! theres not much this lens cant do! I took it to the zoo and performed great indoors and out! took some pics of dolphins indoors and they turned out sharp! took some great pics of flying hawks, so its a great action lens! very fast and quiet autofocus! easy to carry and use all day long! was looking at the 70-200 f/4 IS when the new 70-300L came out and i just knew i had to have it for the extra 100mm. from my expirience, this lens doesnt need a tripod collar so not an issue with me.excellent, sharpness, color, and contrast from this lens,as long as you get a good copy, mine needed to be recalibrated and when i got it back from canon it was very sharp! ! you wont be disapointed!
Pros: very sharp! solid feel! very smooth!
Cons: none

Very Satisfied

I took possesion of this lens one week ago. It was my first L lens purchase. I had been on the fence between a 70-200 and the 70-300 IS USM.
I have made the right choice. I have photographed flowers from the garden, portraits of people, wildlife and waterfowl in this short time. I tried a close up using live view and 10X focusing with my 7D camera. This lens is SHARP!
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images
Cons: lack of tripod ring

Has become my go-to lens for the 7D Mk II cameras

I shoot a lot of motorsports - 30 events a year on average. In the old days, a 70-200 was considered the "normal" lens for track-side work. Safety concerns have pushed us further and further away so we need the reach of a 300mm on a crop-sensor camera to get the kind of shots editors want. I have the wonderful 100-400 lens and instead of upgrading my 70-200 to get the IS technology I love, my Canon rep suggested I try this lens for reach, excellent optics and compact size. I made the decision to follow his suggestions and I'm very pleased I did. The 70-200 sits in the camera bag now for super low light assignments and I use this lens on the 7D Mk II and the 100-400 on my 5D Mk III for most race days. It's a rugged, weather sealed winner for what i do. Yes, it's a little slow but the high ISO capabilities of my Canon bodies, for practical matters, puts that concern to bed for me.

I shoot this on a crop body (7D M2). It's sharp, fast, and a pound lighter than the 100-400 It's close focusing makes it great for flowers, put tubes on It and you have the ideal macro. A real winner

A Great Lens

I am approaching what you would call an amateur photographer. I bought this lens to use on a 9 day safari in Kenya. I did some research beforehand and found some recommendations emphasizing a fixed length telephoto lens because you almost always use it at maximum zoom. This is not true. Our safari experience did include animal viewing at a distance but also included lions, cheetahs, giraffes, baboons and elephants so close that a 300mm zoom would allow you to perform a dental examination. You definitely need the range of a zoom and at 70mm with my cropped sensor camera (cannon EOS 40D) sometimes you were still too close. Changing lenses on safari in the dust and bouncing along the road is not a graceful procedure. The image stabilization feature of the lens is great but a bean bag is indispensable. I love the lens and the results I obtained. The detail it captured allowed images to be enlarged and still retain great clarity.l also love the way at full zoom and maximum aperture you get great detail and a pleasant background blur. Any problems I had with the photographs were do to my errors, mostly with shutter speed (lack of attention to it). It is a great lens and everyone who sees you using it is impressed and expects you to be taking great photos.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images

I shoot portraits, body shots for press releases. I love this lens. I'm mainly outside on the beach so the 4-5.6 doesn't bother me. My favorite lens.

I've had this lens for 5 years now and shoot with it on a crop sensor (7D MkII) body. It has a lightning fast focus and great range. I dropped it and had it repaired and calibrated by Canon I like it too much. Now it is as new and sharper than before.

Super lens

Superior lens as far as sharpness at all focal length and speed. Not much difference in the weight as compared to my 100mm macro. Works great for macro as well as distance. I haven't taken it off my camera since I got it a week ago. I not ready to spring the $$$$ for the tripod collar--works ok on my heavier tripod wihout. In retrospect, I would most certainly choose this one again, highly recommended.
Pros: sharp and fast, reasonable weight and compact size, very nice presentation, quality build
Cons: no tripod collar included, will not work with extenders
