Outstanding Lens!

Wow, not much I can say that others haven't already. This is my very first L series lens. I am defnitely an amateur and purchased my first DSLR about 3 years ago, a Canon T1i refurb. With that camera I also purchased the kit lens (18-55) and also the relatively highly regarded (for a kit lens) 55-250. Most of my shooting is at the longer end of the 55-250 and I typically shoot my kids at play (park, soccer, baseball) as well as the occasional air show and at a Formula 1 event (Austin). I also enjoy shooting wildlife and birds in flight. I always felt that I was missing out and that I assumed my T1i had some focus issues as images weren't as sharp as I had anticipated. Wow was I ever wrong.
I took a major step forward and purchased this lens and I am absolutely awestruck. Images are now FAR sharper, the IS works great and AF is super quick and is spot on and virtually silent. I can now crop images considerably and still have sharper pictures than I could with the 55-250 uncropped.
While this lens is quite expensive I consider it an investment that I can keep for many years even if I eventually upgrade camera bodies. This has made my T1i a new camera all over again and has encouraged me to actually learn how to shoot better. I have gone in the last month from someone that shoots full auto or one of the auto modes (sports, landscape, etc.) to someone that now shoot 80% on one of the manual modes (TV, AV, etc.).
I LOVE this lens! The only cons I listed above...for this kind of money, please Canon please include a better case and a tripod ring...this lens deserves those.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images, great is
Cons: lack of included mount, lack of included hard case

The lens is crystal clear and tac sharp. While many complain it needs a collar, I suggest a little exercise. It is very comfortable to hold and not much difference in weight versus the 24-70L. While I too would like a lower price, you get what you pay for. In this case, I paid for a crystal clear, sharp, long range zoom lens. That's exactly what I received.

Great travel lens!

I have used this lens on a trip to South Africa and the quality of shots I got were amazing especially the numerous birds using 250mm to 300mm tele range settings. The big five and other animal shots that this lens helped me get just made my trip. The cost of this lens really gives you a bang for your buck. The only con I have for this lens is that you cannot add a tele extender.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, small for ease of travel, image stabilzation
Cons: cannot add an tele extender

Not as sharp as expected

This makes a good travel lens. It is versatile, relatively low weight and not too flashy. If you are looking for a sharp tele-zoom this is not the lens you need.
Pros: versatility
Cons: Semi-sharp images
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

A Great New Product

This is the L lens I've been waiting for. The 100-400L was too long and heavy. The 70-200L f/4 IS,which I've also owned, didn't quite have enough reach without a 1.4x TC -- which made it too long and operationally inconvenient. Some will say that it should be faster, a constant f/4 or such. But with today's cameras, capable of clean shots at higher ISOs, fast is not so important as it was before. My experiences with this lens have all been positive .. except writing the check to pay for it. But I did so with no hesitation, and would buy it again.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images, not all that large and heavy
Cons: price

Best travel lense.

I bought this lense couple months ago, it is one of the best lense I've used. It works very fast, and quality is superb and totally takes a beating. It is the perfect travel lense for me because of the wide range of zoom. I really wish the price was a bit lower though...
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images, high range zooming
Cons: price

Almost good enough

I really wanted to love this lens - small form factor, cool diffractive optics tech, and decent IS - but in the end the image quality just wasn't there. Sharpness and contrast on the long end of the range was routinely disappointing on my 7D.
I have high hopes for the 70-300 L IS USM I just purchased to replace the DO lens.
Pros: Super-sharp images
Cons: Semi-sharp images
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great Lens

I have been using this lens for about 6 months now, it is a super lens. I was using the entry 75-300 lens that I thought
I was happy with it until I started using the L series lens. The only thing I wish is that it would work with the 2X extender.
I just purchase the new canon 6d and it would be nice if it had a little more distance range. I was using the Rebel T2i
with the L lens and for bird shots it does better that the 6D until you get into the higher ISO ranges, where the 6D by far excels in.
Pros: does not except extender
Cons: super sharp lens
