Can't Use Extenders?
on May 5, 2011

I tested this lens to see if it could replace my 100-400. I certainly like that it's lighter and smaller, and the optics quality is fantastic. The rotating zoom ring (vs push/pull) is more versatile (I think push/pull is fine for still photography but when I shoot video it's impossible.) I also agree with others who said Canon should include the tripod mount ring, but that's minor. The biggest problem for me is that unlike the 100-400, this lens wont' work with the Canon Extender EF 1.4X III and 2x III. I occasionally want to go out to 500+ (e.g when shooting sports or auto racing). This is really too bad. I don't understand why Canon would not make it work, possibly a size issue? If I could use the Extender I would make the replacement and give this lens 4.5 stars.
Pros: Superior build quality, Super-sharp images
Cons: no extender support

Great Lens

I love the sharpness and silent fast focusing of this lens.
At the price I paid for it a tripod mount ring should have been included. Canon should send one free to anyone who bought this lens due to the front heavy situation when trying to use a tripod. I fear I will break the bottom out of my camera body.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images
Cons: no tripod mount

Nice lens but needs tripod ring collar

Haven't done much shooting but I am very surprised there is no tripod ring collar mount for such a big (and expensive!) lens. I can't see using this on a tripod without one. I really wish Canon would just include the tripod ring with this lens!
Pros: Superior build quality
Cons: no tripod collar ring

Excellent lens that but...

This is a very good lens that is very sharp on both the wide and telephoto end. I did have to micro adjust the telephoto end. That said I give this lens a 4 instead of a 5 due to the location of the focus ring and Canon's failure to provide a tripod collar. It is just too easy to accidently change focus while shooting hand held. A tripod collar would help mitigate this design issue.

Excellent performance and value

I have several other L Series lenses for myself, but got this one for my wife. The construction feels very sturdy, as one would expect for an L Series lens, but it is comparatively lightweight for the zoom it achieves. The autofocus is quiet, crisp, and generates very sharp images throughout its range. It is considerably more compact and lightweight than my 100-400. (When are they going to update the 100-400??) I like the locking feature to prevent slippage of the zoom mechanism on the 70-300 better than the tensioning ring system on the 100-400.
It is a high quality, easy to use lens which produces very crisp images. What more could you want?
Pros: relatively compact

Don't Waste Your Money

Never could get a decent photo out of this lens, photos always slightly out of focus, couldn't handle high light conditions at all. NOT the all around lens I expected. Replaced it with the 38-300 L lens.
Cons: Slow auto-focus, Semi-sharp images

Why did Canon make this Lens?
on December 3, 2010

Just had this lens for a week rental and sad to say, I don't know why it was made. Used it on my 5D Mark II.
First I have the 70-200 F4 IS USM lens which is fantastic but I thought I would replace it with this lens. Well, it is not only heavier but why F5.6 @ 200-300? Comparing the two lenses,I found the 70-200 to be sharper at all focal distances and the colors slightly better but if one were to say that the new lens goes to 300mm, well just crop @ 200mm. Besides the above, the cost is as heavy as the lens. If you are going to go with a lens of this weight, get the F2.8. Sorry Canon because all my other equipment from you is great.

Nice Lens

I have had this lens 4 months now. I shoot about half handheld outside and half on a tripod. The compact design is great at 70mm and lens extends as you zoom which is 'old school' but not too distracting. It will even 'stand up' in most camera bags meaning it takes a lot less room than comparable lenses. Image quality is good, AF is quiet/smooth, and IS is adequate. On a tripod I do sometimes notice some shake when lens was extended (even on my heavier tripod). I am sure this will be better when I find the 'optional' collar. It has unavailable thru most retailers since I bought the lens and is quite pricey. Regardless I think it is a must have item with this lens. Overall the lens performs well and once I get my hands on a collar, I will enjoy it much more.
Pros: compact and solid
Cons: collar not included
