Love the ET-4550

I love this printer. I have been using Epson printers for years and this is just as great as all of them... though there is one design problem with the copy feature. It will not print a light blue when using the copy feature. I tried it on two printers and have decided not to try another... I'll live with it. Love also the ink well feature!

Awesome Printer - No Cartridges to replace..

Having had over the years Canon, HP, Apple and previous generations of Epson printers, AND having worked as a professional in the commercial printing industry, I can honestly say that this is an awesome printer.
We now have an Epson ET-4550
"PrecisionCore" print technology
Legal size platen
Tanks instead of cartridges
Awesome print quality
BONUS - The printed text is seemingly impervious to Highlighters - as opposed to the HP inkjet prints that would smear all over the place when highlighted.
TWO THUMBS UP!

Sorry I bought three of these

I traded in my old Epson printers for three of these Ecotank printers thinking they would be a technological upgrade. I liked the idea that a year's supply of ink could be loaded at a time. What I got are printers that print much slower than the older ones I replace and that don't scan well, if at all. It's advertised as having a 30 page adf but won't scan more than two pages at a time, slowly. More pages causes it to give an adf jam notice though there are no pages in the feeder. My employees are begging my to buy them other printers. I am greatly disappointed since I have used Epson printers exclusively for the past 10 years.

So far so good

Everything worked right away except for the scan function but after quickly installing a set up updates using my Mac Air, all is well. Wireless setup was a breeze. If the inks last half as much as Epson claims, this is the way to go. Have spent over two grand on ink cartridges on my previous inexpensive to buy "all in ones".
Great print quality and easy to use.

So far... not so good

There is a delay when sending things to the printer. It is noisy. Paper tray doesn't hold much paper. Haven't had long enough to see how long the ink lasts. There isn't a place for a Zip drive so I can scan to it. All around, disappointed.

Setup Was Easy

I'd read reviews that warned that handling the ink was sort of difficult. But, the instructions for the whole setup process, including loading ink, was very clear and not hard to follow.
I can't wait to NOT have to order ink every month!
My rating is based on my personal experience with the setup and a few pages printed.

Saves Expensive Cartridges But Many Drawbacks
on April 29, 2016

The primary advantage of the EcoTank is that the ink that comes with it lasts much longer than cartridges on conventional printers. You do save money because you do not need to repeatedly purchase cartridges. Loading the ink does take care and it is easy to get ink on your hands when doing so. However, I've had this printer nearly 8 months and the ink is only roughly 1/2 used up in my mild to moderate home/office application. There are several areas where the Epson should be improved: (1) it takes many seconds for it to start making a copy or scan compared to the leading brand (which I had for years), (2) the two sided copy feature repeatedly comes on even after being turned off, (3) the sheet feeder used to feed the document to be copied or scanned or faxed jams easily, (4) there is no way to individually feed a sheet of checks (for example) or a sheet of colored paper that you want to be printed upon without pulling out the paper tray (after pushing back in the output tray) (while the leading brand has an open ended supply tray into which you can insert a few sheets to be printed upon without removing the tray), (5) it takes longer to make a copy or scan than does the leading brand (I had before), (6) the display screen is about 20% smaller than the screen on the leading brand I had before, (7) the tactile feel of the buttons is not as good, (8) while both units are the same width, the Epson has fewer button options, meaning you have to select many of the copy or fax or scan features from the slower, smaller menu rather than by simply pressing a button. You will find yourself having to use the menu even to make a copy, as opposed to simply pressing a single button. Low tech users will get frustrated. Epson's Eco idea is a good one. The implementation should be improved.
