purchase a ET-4750 today.
Set up took me a while, however instructions were easy to follow and everything went A-OK.
Looking forward for my new printer to give me trouble free printing.

ET-4550 first impressions

I ordered this printer after my old NX series Epson all in one needed ink and had some print head segments missing. I ordered this particular model because it had both the new eco-tank configuration and the new Precision Core print head, and with the bonus ink it comes with it is essentially close to the same price as the 4500. The footprint on the desk was surprisingly compact, not being much larger than my old NX.
Setup - Plan on a little time. The unit was well packed, with the usual Epson blue tape keeping everything closed. They supply an extra plastic bag in the packing materials..What? (Read further). I followed the easy to follow step by step directions. After completing the process, I STRONGLY suggest you follow them carefully, including their precautions. The most tedious is filling the ink talks for the first time. Put the printer where it is going to live, or very close by. Protect the area while dealing with the ink. This is a process you need to do only very occasionally, so although you have to be careful, you won't be doing it very often.
Filling the tanks was not the easiest job. Go slow and be very careful not to spill. The tanks will take the entire bottle of ink. Even being careful, I managed to get a bit of ink outside the tank. Having a few tissues nearby quickly resolved that, but planning on the worst, by wearing gloves and having the area protected prevented any issues. Once the top of the bottle is in the tank, you can squeeze the bottles to fill the tanks more quickly.
Tanks filled and safely capped, the rest of the setup was uneventful. Charging the ink system for the first time takes some time. I started the process and left the printer alone to do it's thing. I came back some time later and it was ready to go. The best thing to do is just walk away for awhile and leave it to do it's thing. The remaining setup of Wifi all went very smoothly.
Ok, so what's the deal with the extra plastic bag? Well, if you have to move or ship this printer and there is any possibility that it might get turned up on end or otherwise not kept in its normal orientation, the ink can leak. The bag is there to put the printer in, so it will contain the mess if that should happen. Obviously, Epson encountered this issue. Why they weren't able to figure out a way to prevent that possibility I don't know. I'm sure if it happens, you will need to send the printer in to be repaired as cleaning the mess would be impossible. Also, I don't know how Epson would ever get one of these back without leakage if you needed to exchange it or otherwise get warranty service. However, that's not my problem.
Printing- The unit prints very fast, especially multi page documents. Print quality is excellent. I had no print quality issues or adjustments needed during setup. Print quality perfect right out of the box! I did notice that this is a dye based ink set, which looks a little different than the pigment inks, but it's sharp, text is like a laser, without the raised surface, so it has a printed page look. It will be interesting, and I look forward to printing some photos with the dye based inks.
I was able to see this printer in my home network with no issue. I have yet to try the the web based and direct printing, but don't anticipate a high usage of these features. For what it's worth, the printer has a web based interface if you use your browser to go to the printers ip address. All kinds of info there all in one place.
The scanner works as expected, produced excellent results for copying. It has two modes, scanning as the paper feeds when using the document feeder, or as a flat bed. Both scan methods provided good results, excellent contrast and color fidelity.
Epson scan engines are often overlooked in these all-in-one devices, but the company's scanners are highly rated and it appears that the technology share is happening in these printers.
FIVE STARS for device function and print quality. FOUR STARS because they could improve on the ink fill process. Are you listening Epson? Color code the ink tank caps! How about a one way valve that only opens when the bottle tip is inserted? Put the same in the bottle so it won't spill. Surround the ink tank necks with a fiber pad to absorb any splash/spill. I don't anticipate filling more often than once a year if that, so it's not that big a deal and ink is now cheap! It could be made easier! Include gloves! I'm happiest that there are no more worries about when the next cartridge will need to be changed and having to go through the extra charge cycles.
Happy printing. The setup is worth the results on this one. Highly recommended.

Great Concept

I love the concept of having a colored printer without the expensive ink cartridges! I have previously always used laser (B&W) printers for costs of ink and crispness of print. I was impressed by the crisp printing of this ink jet...the words printed very, very close to a laser printer. The setup was very minimal...considering you have to prep the ink 'tanks' with ink. I had no experience at this at (ink tanks) and the whole process took me about 20 minutes of my time plus 20 minutes for the ink to 'charge'. So to unbox, plug in, setup wireless, fill the ink tanks and actually print was about 20 minutes hands on....note: you do have to wait about 20 minutes for the initial charging of the ink. I followed the instructions and the prompts with great ease. The instructions were clear and simple. I'm very curious if the costs hold up to their markets where I shouldn't have to fill the tanks again for about 2 years. Also.. I love the 1 machine for printing, copying, scanning, and faxing.

What a great printer!

I bought this printer for my son at college. I knew he would have a need for color printing, but I was really set on purchasing a color laser because of the cost of inkjet cartridges. I tested it at home with some color documents and then some pictures. Everything I printed looked great. Grudgingly gave it my son for college. He has now made some new friends at school, especially at midnight when they run out of ink and need to print something in color for class the next day. All of them have commented on how great the final documents look stating they are better quality than a color laser. That was it, I bought one for myself!

Epson ET-4550

Very disappointed with this printer considering how much we paid for it. It doesn't print more than it does print. Several times we have to shut down the printer and start from scratch. If I had the opportunity to "do over" I would not! When trying to print from our lap top we have to delete the printer, then reinstall to get it to work.

I have used epson for years and have loved them. This product's only claim to fame is ink lasts forever. Other than that, this product is disappointing. Cannot make double sided copies. Scanner does not work well. Cannot scan double sided pages. It only has one or two functions. It's like a printer from 1999 with ink that lasts forever.
