Not worth the price of admission

We have had nothing but problems since we purchased the printer about a year ago. About once or twice a week we have to clean the heads because it prints lines on the pages. Now it only shows as a fax machine. I uninstalled the printer and deleted all of the drivers and it still shows as a fax machine. Very disappointed in Epson, I thought their quality was better.

IMPROVEMENT NEEDED

Takes too much time to load paper and paper tray is not big enough. Output tray a constant problem getting it to open and close properly--it wastes a great deal of my time. Hard to complete your new software downloads when I don't know if I am making the right printer and driver selections because they don't match the info in my User Guide and invoice purchase info.

printing ok until today. Print heads self-destructed? Are not aligning & making horrendous noises when I attempt to align and/or clean print heads. Not printing. Do i buy a new printer now? No idea if this this printer can be salvaged. Not happy.

Clumsy to use, weak picture quality, scans are too dark
on April 5, 2019

My last Epson printer was an Artisan 800 that worked well until it reached the end of its print life. I replaced it with this Expression Premium XP-830, and I'm not happy. Connecting via USB always returned a "can't find the printer" message, and then started printing. Before long, Epson Scan stopped finding the printer altogether. Resetting the printer to factory default and reinstalling the printer on my PC as new didn't help. Reinstalling *again* via wireless helped with printing, but Epson Scan crashes on startup about half the time, even after clean re-install.
Print quality is decent for text, but terrible for pictures. For pictures, the XP-830 defaults to auto-color (or whatever it's called), which washes out color as if designed to make pictures look bad. Bypassing auto-color is cumbersome in the print driver AND on the printer using an SD card, and even then, picture quality is poor compared to my old Artisan printer. Making matters worse is that I can't seem to change the default; I can shut off auto-color in some places, but it comes back like the proverbial bad penny, forcing me to manually set color for every single picture.
The scanner works, but seems to be on overdrive, resulting in scans that are too dark. No matter what I'm scanning, I have use Preview and then set the Brightness manually at plus 15 to 20 to get a decent scan, and I have to do this manually for every single scan. And because I have to use Preview, the ADF is rendered useless unless I want dark scans.
Bottom line: This printer works reasonably well for printing text. For everything else, it's terrible, as if Epson actually tried to make a bad printer. My next all-in-one will be made by someone else.

Not happy!

Purchased this printer over 1 year ago basically for printing my tax returns. In the past I've had HP or Cannon printers, but this Epson looked like it fit the bill for me. I've had nothing but problems with this printer. I'm now trying to print my tax returns but I can't because it says it needs photo ink. Funny, but I've never printed any photos on this printer, but it is out of photo ink. How can that be? Even so, I've not trying to print photos, I'm trying to print tax returns using the regular black ink. It will not let me print. I've also tried numerous times to update drivers on this printer, but I keep getting error messages and it will not complete. Maybe I was just unlucky to get one that has issues, but in the end, this is probably the last Epson printer I will ever buy. Hope you have better luck than I did.

Outrageous Updates Causing me to Trash this Printer
on May 31, 2019
Posted by: Suze2
I really liked my XP-830 until Epson started with their outrageous updates. Before that the printer was easy to use. It printed very good. Then the updates started. It wouldn't recognize the cartridges that I had been using with great success. So, I purchased Epson's very expensive cartridges. It worked great until those started running out. After that nothing went right. Only one color was low. I replaced it and the printer immediately indicated that another cartridge was low. It had previously been half full. But, I replaced it . Then it started indicating that another one was empty until I had replaced every cartridge. At that point it started over with the first one I had replaced. It was now showing it empty. That printer is going in the trash!

Hello Suze 2, Epson periodically provides firmware updates to address issues of security, performance, minor bug fixes, and to ensure your printer functions as designed. Your XP-830 was designed to work only with genuine Epson ink cartridges, therefore some updates may affect the functionality of third-party ink. If we can help with anything else, please reach out to our Epson Support Team at (562) 276-4382; Hours: Monday – Friday, 6am – 8pm PT; Saturday, 7am – 4pm PT. Sincerely, Elizabeth – The Epson Team.
