the MFC 475 was much easer to install and setup. wireless installed it self.

Our New Printer

We purchased the MCF-J485DW on Jan. 16th, today is Feb. 1st.
After the purchase we connected to our WiFi server and to our 3 computers. The install is not as easy as Brother would lead you to believe.
All has been woking well until last night. When I went to print some puzzles for my wife which I do twice a day - morning and night - I received an error message "Server not connected". This despite the icon on the small printer screen indicated connected. Also, when I logged into my WiFi server, it showed the printer being connected.
I used the setup wizard to reconnect.
I had 5 pages to print. I printed 4 before it dropped out of being connected, once again.
I reconnected and printed the last page. This morning when I got up, it was no longer connected. When I connect using wizard, I can print using my Mac, but our two PC's can't find the printer.
I called Geek Squad and they said I have to bring it into the store. I have a 10:45 appointment for tomorrow morning.
We'll see.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great simple little machine

Replaced MFC-5895cw with subject machine for sake of upgrading software, smaller footprint and simpler wireless operation. MFC-5895cw served me well for 5 years and I gave it to a friend who will use it for many more years.
So far subject machine met my expectations though I have not tried to use fax. I like brother printers, this is my fourth one and unless they go downhill I will not buy any other brand. Inks are expensive but worth the dependability in my opinion.
I would recommend this to a friend!

decent printer fair price

clear print, a little bit noisy in the mechanical operation...too little printing done to evaluate ink usage...printer does not seem to make connections on network unless individual computer has this device set as the default printer and another brother is the network default already...
I would recommend this to a friend!

Some Pros, Many Cons

After doing some research, I concluded that Brother Printers were the best for what I did. After a trip to my local Best Buy and seeing this printer on sale and seeing the low cost of ink, I got pretty excited! When I got it home, the set up was very easy and in depth. The print quality was AMAZING, BUT after only and hour of use, I discovered the following
CONS:
- Even at the "Normal" print quality, it takes FOREVER to print documents that are multiple pages.
- Once installing actual ink (not the starter ones) after printing 20-30 pages, the black ink was already a 1/4 of the way gone.
- The printer was set up very close to my laptop/router, but in the middle of print jobs, it would randomly stop printing and say "offline"
CONS:

Final Words: I am impressed with the print quality, but due to it being extremely slow and having WiFi issues, the printer WILL be going back to Best Buy.

Was recommended to us in the store. Good price does everything we need it to do. 4 ink cartridges that are not expensive. Great color easy to use and I EVEN SET IT UP AND GOT IT RUNNING. That speaks volumes for easy set up. Very, Very pleased. Easy to follow instructions on the color screen.

Overall this is good printer. While it was easy to set up, it prints slowly and is loud. The quality of the print is really good. The ink is affordable.
