I just purchased this to go with my new 4K projector and so far I'm very impressed. There are so many programming options and I've yet to experience any playback issues, even with 4K content.

strange beginnings

I had a Roku 2 prior to this one, however, when I went to activate the Roku 4 on line I was sent to another website, where the process was review and I was connected to someone who said they were from Roku technical support. the short story is that this company said there was something wrong with my network that for a one time fee of $99 they would fix it. I said without hesitation, absolutely not, and that I would refund the Roku 4 the next day. I went back to my computer and all of a sudden a new activation code appeared, and the process went smoothly.
I did notice that the Roku operation was a little choppy later on in the evening, so a assumed it was my network being over extended.
I do have 4 HD tv and worked well, for the most part.

The Roku has always been a no-brainer as far as set up goes. I did find this particular unit (Roku 4) for some reason, a little harder to set up however. Not necessarily due to technical reasons, but due (I believe) to the required firmware update it needed to install. There was a period right after that install, where the unit seemed to freeze up. I tried correcting by doing several things, but once I picked up the streamer itself & checked the tightness of each connection, it then seemed to resume its set-up. It could be that this was simply due to a lengthy firmware update, however I cannot say that for sure. It found my network wirelessly without a hitch & then let me select each program/application I wanted to install & did so painlessly. After set-up was complete, I went in & looked at several sample videos to check clarity to see if I could actually see a difference in the 4K technology. I can't honestly say I could see a big difference however as far as video PQ goes, but I can say that the Roku 4 certainly seemed snappier than my Roku 3 as far as movement around each app/program & then the remote response time also seemed much better. This is in no way meant to be a negative review, but I simply need to spend more time checking out more of the programs available. But for the $129 price-tag, I will say it is well worth the upgrade & I'm glad I made the move to do so.

I got this as a birthday gift. The hardest part was opening up the back of the remote for the batteries. I actually had to look that up online.

I have only used this for about a week and only had it freeze twice on me (It freezes then after about 30 seconds it restarted). Also, the battery cover end-clip snapped off when I slid the cover off to place the batteries in.

Upgraded from a Roku XD

The Roku 4 is much much faster and responsive than the XD we had for years. The video has no lag, no interlacing, and the audio sounds much better too. I didn't even realize how slow the Roku XD was until we got the Roku 4. However, every good review should list some bad stuff. I think I prefer the simpler interface on the XD. The Roku 4 throws in Ads next to your list of shows, and there is no where to turn them off. Netflix on the Roku 4 automatically plays the next show in a series indefinatelly which is fairly annoying but that's probably a Netflix problem and not a Roku problem - still, how about not making changes like this to products without adding a setting the consumer can change to turn them off? Maybe what Roku thinks is best isn't what we want? Still, its a great product. I only have these complaints because I have a prior version to compare it to that I preferred the interface on. Anyone buying a Roku for the first time probably wouldn't complain because they have been conditioned to see Ads everywhere they look anyway.
