I upgraded to the Roku 4 from a Roku 3 that I had for over a year. I upgraded because I have a 4K tv and I wanted the new fancy remote that you can talk to, as well as a faster overall experience. The box itself is nice. I like how thin it is and how it doesn't stand out on the shelf, as well as the speed and 4K capability. The remote, however, is a bit of a disappointment. The new directional-pad hurts my hand if I type with it, most noticeable when logging into an app. It doesn't click like the old one does, it has a long smooth drop and doesn't actually input until you hit the bottom of it. As a result you're overpressing it on every single input and it gets super tiring. There's also a dedicated button for Netflix, Amazon, Sling, and Rdio. Rdio no longer exists, so this remote just came with a completely useless button. I think dedicated buttons are absolutely stupid - and they feel like ads you can't get rid of. I'd much prefer programmable buttons in those spots for my most-used apps.

My wife and I purchased the Roku last Sunday and haven't figured it out yet. It came with NO INSTRUCTIONS and only a rudimentary set of photos of how to hook up the HDMI cables. There were NO instructions for how you're supposed to operate the system. EXTREMELY frustrating.

The quality of output on this unit is much better than on my older Roku 3, it looks better on the same tv. It also offers better integration into entertainment systems (such as a surround sound system). The one thing I don't like are the built in app buttons on the remote, 50% of which I don't use.

I bought this because of the 4K capability. I planned to connect to my Seiki 4K TV and look at the 4K Content available on Netflix. I did not realize that my TV does not have 4K for the latest 4K standard. To use this for 4K I need the lastest TV.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Good TV interface, poor media player

Roku is terrific for its basic purpose. The media player, however, has very poor interface with my films and songs. Very clunky. For music, there is no shuffle feature, you can only go through one file at a time, and some music is distorted because it does not adjust to denser file types.
