I bought the Roku 3 for our bedroom because the Time Warner set top box rental went up. I liked it so much, I bought the Roku 4 for our family room....

Fast, but too hot

I upgraded from a Roku 2 and have been impressed by the speed of the 4. We primarily use it for Netflix and a few kid channels, and programming streams quickly without interrupting buffering.
However, I'm on my second unit in 6 months. I needed a warranty replacement because my first unit overheated and malfunctioned. The Roku 4 runs VERY hot both in streaming and on standby; at rest the new unit runs at 103 degrees F, and while streaming I've seen temps on the old one approaching 120. And that isn't enclosed in a cabinet but in open air. The unit isn't designed to dissipate the excess heat well, so I've had to elevate the new one above the entertainment center to vent it. I can only imagine how much energy I'm paying for and losing through this constant heat loss.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

we had a very old Roku and thought something was wrong with it however later we found out the batteries were bad so now we have the new Roku 4
