Disappointing especially compared to Roku 3

I upgraded from Roku 3 to Roku 4 and it has been a disappointing experience. Here are the issues: The unit takes longer to boot. Network connectivity is weak (Roku 3 would never lose its network connectivity) The remote is seldom not recognized by the player. I have to take out the batteries and put it back again for the player to respond to remote button presses The player just hangs...Netflix and hulu videos would abruptly freeze. Killing the power to the player and restarting is the only option Screen mirroring feature is not stable
In general, the player doesn't give me confidence that it will work. Roku 3 was a product that I could swear by. I have convinced many of my friends to buy Roku 3. I bought Roku 4 (without having any need to buy) because I knew Roku 3 was a rock solid product and Roku 4 would be better. But with the disappointing experience with Roku 4, I cannot recommend this product to anyone.

Hi there. Thank you for the feedback and we're sorry your out-of-box experience wasn't what you had hoped. We'd recommend that you update your firmware as we believe it will improve your experience. We're aware a small number of customers are having a similar experience with remotes. While we work to resolve this, you can use your Roku 3 remote, or the mobile app. Tips on pairing your Roku 3 remote or using your mobile app are (insert URLs here). If that doesnt solve this, please contact us directly at customer.advocate@roku.com.

I had been a Roku fan and looked forward to the Roku 4 until I actually got one. Blue screen flash during playback of 4k content. Have attached other 4K streaming devices without the same outcome so I conclude it is the Roku 4.Spend your money on something else.

Finally, I am able to disconnect form the cable company and feel I am all the better off for it. This little thing is awesome, and has amazing picture quality. Actually better than my x-cable company’s HD package channels. Which by the way, I was paying a lot more for. Together with Sling, Hulu, & Plex & all the HD broadcast like Smithsonian I am no longer beholden to them. Awww, to taste the sweetness of freedom….. Anyway, I can’t really say enough good things about this little blk box. I especially like the remote finder. Definitely a nice extra touch. Lastly I like that Roku is not beholden to its own streaming content & gives unbiased search results. Unlike many of the other streaming devices. (i.e. Fire Stick & Chromecast, Apple TV) The only thing I could suggest improving would be to add a DVR component & a power button. I understand this little thing goes to sleep on its own but I just like the comfort that a power button gives. Besides that, this little box is a home run!

Happy with great features. Glad it works with Ipad keyboard. Still wish Roku would work with bluetooth keyboard. It would be so much simpler!

I have owned numerous Roku devices since the every beginning and typically equip ever TV with one and quickly adopted the Roku 3 because it was fast and had tones of feature. And while I don't have a 4K TV I pre-ordered the Roku 4 because I wanted the latest and greatest, boy what a mistake. This thing is buggy and every update makes it worse. The HDCP and HDMI handshakes are awful. I have never had a device that had any issues syncing up with my Denon and Panasonic, but the Roku 4 is junk. It was a chore to get it to work, then they just released 8863 firmware and now it will never sync. Pulled it out and back to Roku 3. What a waste of $129. I guess I will put it on the TV in the gym and see how it works there, but that is way overkill! Bad job Roku and if they don;t have this worked out by the time I get a 4K TV then as much as I hate FireTV I will try that.

I have had the 4 shut down twice for no reason, I have now reset it and it has worked for 4 days. I'll see how it goes.

May be OK for video, but no good for music

I bought the Roku 4 to be able to stream online music from Slacker, Spotify, Pandora, and the many other music streaming services offered by Roku. I was not interested in video streaming. The Roku has an immense library of streaming services, so no complaints there. For the most part the interface is very good, except the Spotify UI is too basic to be useful.
My issue is that the sound quality of the music streaming services through the optical audio connection is horrible, almost unlistenable. I have a high end DAC and audio system. I am not listening through TV speakers. The sound is extremely compressed and on Spotify the sound is clipped and extremely distorted regardless of volume level. My Sony Blu Ray player has significantly better sound quality with Slacker and Pandora, but it does not offer as many services as the Roku. This was a big let down.
