Disappointing

I bought the Roku mainly for the WatchESPN app. Half the time the Roku crashes when I try to watch a game. At the same time I can watch the same games on my laptop on WatchESPN so it's not my connection. Right now is a perfect example. I was able to watch one game that was on replay, the other 5 I tried crash the system.
Also, when watching Netflix the screen sometimes flashes like the brightness setting was flipped to high then back down.
Last complaint, when listening with the headphones through the controller the volume will start to cut in and out after a while. Tried different headphones and got the same results.
Roku, please patch your software!

A step down from the Roku 3

I bought this Roku 4 for a 4K TV i'll be getting in the near future. I hooked it up to a 1080P TV and while it works I feel it's a step backwards. First of all it is a lot bigger than the Roku 3. The Roku 3 was so small I could stick it anywhere. The Roku 4 is big enough to be considered a component on my AV rack. Secondly, there is a fan. While my fan is not as loud as some I can still hear it from a few feet away. My bigger concern with the fan is that it will eventually fail at which point I'll need to discard the Roku 4. The fan also requires more careful placement of the Roku 4 to avoid overheating. For anyone with a 1080P TV stay away from Roku 4! Roku 3 is superior!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

ear plugs don't work

I bought the Roku 4 because of the ear plugs. I hope that I could use the ear plugs because I need the sound higher then my wife. However, the Roku 4 doesn't do that. It is just as well because the sound from the ear plugs is so bad that you can't hear was is being said.

The Roku 4 is pretty good. I bought both the New Apple TV and the Roku 4 within a week of each other. I would have bought ONLY the Apple TV if there was a way to plug an external drive into it. My family definitely likes the Apple TV better - GUI, games (and a much better selection of free games), no adds, and the Siri search function is way better than the Roku Search, and the new Apple Remote is MUCH nicer.
What is most sad is that the Roku has locked up quite a few times, most notably EVERY time the external drive is attached when waking from sleep mode. However, even when the external drive is not attached, there have been times it has locked up and the remote is rendered useless where I have had to unplug the device to reset it.
There are some notable apps/channels missing as well - ABC, etc - that the Apple TV has.
Therefore...it's alright.

I bought this last week. Still adding channels and getting it set up close to what I had with AT&T without the high bill. Having issues with local channels and it seems as if NBC, CBS, FOX all have channels in the "free" status. ABC, not so much.
I would recommend this to a friend!

A step up

I've had a few different Roku devices. The last couple I have purchased were the 3 and the Stick. All have performed excellently. But as far as picture and performance, the 4 is a major improvement. I use a Roku as the 'main' cable box in my living room (as there is no coaxial connection near where the TV is, and I don't want to run the cable), so having the best picture and functionality there is important. The Roku 4 performs beautifully. The 3 was great, the 4 even better. I couldn't be happier with it.

I've only been using this a couple of days,but so far I'm impressed by the amount of sights available. I'm even more impressed by the speed of access to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and YouTube. The access speed is Three times faster then with my DVDs player or dvr, maybe more. Also you tube etc have a much nicer layout and maneuverability is much improved. The unit is super quiet, I don't even know it's there. All in all, at this point, it deserves Five stars, and in my opinion is an excellent unit.
I would recommend this to a friend!
