No power on off button. Still need a cable provider for most of the channels. Different games than all other Rokus.

I received Roku4 as a gift and I am very satisfied with it except for one thing. When I plug the ear buds into the controller, it kills all other sound so that others in the room cannot hear the program. I like to use the ear buds as I am hard of hearing but then no one else can enjoy the program I am watching. Is there any way around this shortcoming?

Got tired of maintaining my HTPC and got this beast instead. Overall, pretty happy.
PROS: * Better streaming quality than my HTPC (particularly Amazon) * Works with my Plex server * Optical audio out (For Sonos owners) * Receives remote signal even when mounted behind my wall-mounted TV
CONS: * UI is not amazing. Definitely lacks themes. I'm a software developer and found it difficult to even find out _how_ to make my own theme.

Not anywhere close to Amazon Fire TV

I first purchased Fire TV. It lacked a few things like Google play app, and also Synology DS Video app but otherwise very fast, very user friendly, very responsive, and feature full. It also lacked a good media player to play my camcorder's videos at 60p/H.264. The XMBC app was a little hard to install (not available through available apps) but very easily playing those files at recorded bitrate. Plex working like charm. Then due to above deficiencies I got the Roku 4. It was slow, very hard to use the remote control (as opposed to Fire TV which had excellent placed buttons and extremely easy to use). Unfortunately Synology DS Video was not playing any of those files at recorded bitrate and had to down sample. Also the media player which comes with it wasn't at all able to play them (while Fire TV XMBC was easily doing that). Plex also needed to down sample the bitrate to play those files. Overall I returned it withing few hours of trying it and am holding onto my Fire TV and ever since that comparison I'm much happier to keep Fire TV but before that I always was blaming myself that I should have purchased Roku4 . Of note setup was lengthy and somewhat complicated for Roku 4. Return button being on the top was a big hassle compared to Fire TV remote being below the cursurs and very easy to reach.
This review is totally independent of brand names or other reviews and just reflection of my experience. Roku definitely has many capabilities but for my purposes it was not the best.

Unit has had video blackout and digital glitches. Replacing HDMI cable didn't help. SlingTV app frequently buffers where it does not on PC, my Fire Tablet, nor my FireTV. HDCP requirement for 4k is ridiculous. I'm not buying a new TV for a Roku. This unit is going back.

This Roku is useless, frustrating, and of the utmost disappointment - especially after giving it as a gift to my wife and 6 children for Christmas. I subscribe to nothing short of the highest tiered premium Internet (up to 300mbps) along with the most advanced cable modem (16 bonded down-channels) and yet the Roku buffers so much it makes viewing most channels impossible. It is so bad that we have to switch back to streaming through our Home Theater PC; which continues to stream the same exact content flawlessly as always. The only reason we wanted to switch to a Roku over our HTPC is the advantages Roku offered with its remote control, convenient channel menu, and the mobile app. Originally I bought my family the Roku Streaming Stick, but it buffered so often that I thought possibly the WIFI was being interfered with because the Stick had to be plugged in behind the TV. I felt guilty about giving such a disappointing gift, so I immediately replaced it by ordering an upgrade of the best Roku has to offer - which is the Roku 4 with Ethernet. I figured switching to its hard-wired Ethernet port would eliminate the potential for buffering that WIFI may cause. I also considered the Roku 4’s more powerful advanced Quad-core processor compared to the Streaming Stick and thereafter should have produced a smoother streaming experience that comes closer to my HTPC. But at 5 times the extra cost over the Streaming Stick, nothing changed at all with the Roku 4. What a disappointment.
