The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
on February 18, 2017

I would LOVE to be able to give this new dishwasher a 5 star rating, and am I'd love to be able to give this dishwasher a 5 star review, and hopeful after some issues are resolved, I'll be able to do so... but I can't today.
The Good:
GE- In the past, I've only had great products, service and experience with GE. Last year I made one purchase of another brand (begins with 'W' and ends in 'pool') and ended up with a terribly disappointing product. So, when I began my search for a new dishwasher, I limited it to GE only!
PRICE- It would be hard to beat the value this model offers, assuming it lives up to GE's claims and is in great working order. Unfortunately, mine isn't in great working order, so I've rated value low...at least until the issues are resolved.
DESIGN (overall): Nice, contemporary exterior, and, yet a design, finish and handle that still compliments the older GE appliances in my kitchen. I can load far more dishes in this model than my last and really appreciate the deep upper rack and ability to adjust the basket positions to accomodate my needs.
IT DOES DRY! The first time I ran this dishwasher I was SO disappointed, as properly dried dishes was THE most important feature to me in a dishwasher and mine came out dripping wet, even with heated dry on. I thought it was a lost cause, but did search out reviews from people experiencing drying issues and followed the recommendations and advice GE offered them. After four trial and error loads, I'm now very pleased to say this dishwasher dried the last load beautifully! For me, it did require the use of a rinse aid and the "Boost" option, just as GE suggested.
The Bad:
LOWER RACK OPERATION: I've been suprised at the effort required to simply roll out (or really get out) the lower rack! I discovered today three causes. Firstly, the tops of the lower rack, at certain points, rub up against the side of the tub. It's not much at all, but enough to cause resistance. Tub bulging? Secondly, the plastic "rollers" don't make consistent or enough contact at all with the plastic glide to actually activate the rollers. So, I'm namely pulling and sliding plastic against plastic to get the lower rack out -vs- being able to roll it out. Thirdly, when the front wheels/rollers of the rack reach the door seal, they catch on it, creating a bit more and sudden resistance. If the rack is loaded more heavily toward the front, the wheels/rollers literally drop between the roller glide and the dishwasher door. In order to avoid these last two issues, after pulling the rack forward a bit, I lift it up over the gap between the tub and the door seal, set it down and resume pulling. Doesn't seem quite right, does it?!

The Ugly:
CONCERNING NOISES! A few days ago, immediately after installation, I started the dishwasher and retreated to the basement, a full level away and on the other side of the house. Was I ever surprised to hear (especially from SO far away- and later, even while outside in the garage) deep, hum/buzz/vibration/rattle-like noises coming from my brand new appliance. I've now run the dishwasher five times, and while the noise has never been as loud as the first time, it's still very concerning. (After the first run, I did add water to the tub, as suggested by a link GE provided another user with a noise issue).
I've read many of the consumer reviews and hear others boast of how quiet this model dishwasher runs. 51 dB, right? That's one of the reasons I selected this dishwasher. During some cycles, my dishwasher purrs like a kitten and sounds like it is operating properly. The "unhealthy" noise occurs when the dishwasher is pumping water into the disposal, then continuously when it sounds like the dishwasher is again filling with water. I fully expect it to make noise during these functions, however, my dishwasher sounds not only abnormally loud, but, more importantly, "sick" while performing them (unlike the typical smooth starting, stopping and operation of a new, optimally performing motor or pump). My old dishwasher didn't make this noise, nor have I ever heard anyone else's dishwasher make this noise.
I'm especially concerned about the buzz/vibrating as another reviewer of this model at this GE website described a very similar (if not the same) issue. For that reviewer, even after what sounded to be more than one service call, the issue was NEVER resolved. They were very unhappy, and I don't want to be that person!
I have contacted the installer and described the noises. He said, very confidently, they are not installation related. I've referred to the links and responses GE offered other reviewers for information and suggestions relating to noise, including referring to the online GE Dishwasher Owner's Manual's "Noise" section of the "Before you call for service..." section. This section describes noises I would expect to hear and have heard with other models.
So, maybe I just got a lemon? It's certainly not what I've come to expect of GE products over the years, but I do still trust (or, at least am extremely hopeful) GE will be honorable in resolving the issues promptly. Then I look forward to being as pleased with my purchase as the vast majority of others who have very favorably reviewed this GE dishwasher. I wish for mine to be 5 star worthy, too!
